Ecco perché non potete perdervi “The Old guard” (Netflix)/ Review of “The Old guard”

“THE OLD GUARD” di Gina Prince-Bythewood

 

“The Old Guard” è un film d’azione originale Netflix tratto dall’omonimo fumetto di Greg Rucka e diretto da Gina Prince-Bythewood.

 

Andromaca detta Andy (Charlize Theron) è a capo di un gruppo di combattenti che si occupa di blitz di salvataggio umanitari; i quattro componenti del gruppo condividono lo stesso dono, cioè l’immortalità. Loro non invecchiano e quando vengono feriti mortalmente si risvegliano e rigenerano poco dopo.

L’ex agente della CIA Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) li ingaggia per una missione che si rivela una trappola; contemporaneamente, la marine americana Nile (KiKi Layne) scopre di essere immortale anche lei.

 

Nonostante il film si inserisca nel filone supereroi, il suo tono è molto diverso da quello dei classici blockbuster targati Marvel o DC: i quattro immortali originali, in particolare la leader Andy, sono stanchi, sfiduciati nella loro missione, costantemente accompagnati da un senso di perdita per tutti quelli che hanno incontrato e hanno dovuto lasciarsi alle spalle.

Sono sì invulnerabili, ma il loro potere è allo stesso tempo la loro maledizione e vivono nel terrore di essere catturati e rinchiusi in un’eternità di prigionia e sofferenza, come è successo ad altri come loro in passato.

Il cardine della storia, aldilà della trama più evidente, incentrata sul proteggersi e sconfiggere il cattivo di turno, è data dal rapporto tra di loro.

Oltre ad Andy, una splendida Charlize Theron estremamente convincente nel ruolo della guerriera indurita da troppe battaglie, abbiamo Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), che ancora rimpiange di non aver potuto aiutare il figlio morente a metà ‘800 e due soldati che si sono incontrati, amati e uccisi durante le Crociate, Joe (Marwan Kenzari) e Nicky (il “nostro” italiano Luca Marinelli). Il modo poetico e delicato in cui è trattata la loro storia d’amore è uno dei punti di forza del film, grazie in particolare ad una scena molto toccante.

Il rapporto tra Andy e Nile è quello del classico mentore riluttante e della novellina confusa ma di belle speranze, e il duo funziona alla perfezione.

 

Netflix propone un film molto equilibrato e ben strutturato, dal ritmo impeccabile: come molte produzioni destinate allo streaming, risparmia sugli effetti speciali, ridotti all’osso, per investire sulla qualità della sceneggiatura e delle interpretazioni attoriali, con importanti digressioni filosofiche sul significato del dono di Andy e sul suo ruolo nella storia dell’umanità.

Ho apprezzato molto il modo non stereotipato in cui sono stati delineati i personaggi femminili e il rapporto tra di loro.

Il finale lascia aperta la strada a uno o più possibili sequel, che personalmente non vedo l’ora di vedere.

“THE OLD GUARD” by Gina Prince-Bythewood

 

“The Old Guard” is an original Netflix action movie based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novels and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

 

Andromache, called Andy (Charlize Theron,) is at the head of a group of fighters who are specialised in humanitarian rescue raids; the four members of the group share the same gift, immortality. They don’t age and, when mortally wounded, they wake up and regenerate shortly afterwards.

The former CIA agent Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) hires them for a mission that turns out to be a trap; at the same time, the American Marine Nile (KiKi Layne) discovers that she too is immortal.

 

Though the film fits into the superhero genre, its tone is very different from that of classic Marvel or DC blockbusters: the four original immortals, especially the leader Andy, are tired, with no more faith in their mission, constantly accompanied by a sense of loss for everyone they’ve met and had to leave behind.

They are indeed invulnerable, but their power is also their curse; they live in terror of being captured and locked up in an eternity of suffering, as has happened to others like them in the past.

The pivot of the story, beyond the most obvious plot focused on protecting themselves and defeating the villain, is the relationship between them.

Besides Andy, a splendid Charlize Theron who is extremely convincing in the role of the warrior hardened by too many battles, we have Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), who still regrets not being able to help his dying son in the 19th century and two soldiers who met, loved and killed each other during the Crusades, Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (the Italian Luca Marinelli). The poetic and delicate way in which their love story is treated is one of the film’s strong points, thanks to an especially touching scene.

The relationship between Andy and Nile is that of the classic reluctant mentor and the confused but hopeful novice, and the duo works perfectly.

 

Netflix proposes a very balanced and well-structured film, with an impeccable rhythm: like many streaming productions, it saves on special effects, reduced to the bone, to invest on the quality of the screenplay and the acting performances, with important philosophical digressions on the meaning of Andy’s gift and his role in the history of mankind.

I especially appreciated the non-stereotyped way in which the female characters and their relationships are depicted.

The ending leaves the way open for one or more possible sequels, which I personally can’t wait to see.
