“Il Circo della Notte” è un romanzo gaslamp fantasy di Erin Morgenstern del 2011, pubblicato in Italia da BUR.
Nell’Inghilterra di fine ‘800, due maghi, Hector Bowen detto Prospero e il misterioso uomo in grigio A.H., si affrontano ideando una sfida tra loro due allievi: la figlia di Prospero, Celia, affronterà Marco, un orfano scelto da A.H. in un gioco apparentemente privo di regole, in cui i due avversari inizialmente non conoscono la reciproca identità. A questo scopo, viene costruito il “Cirque des Rêves”, un magico circo notturno che presto raccoglie un seguito di appassionati. Ma la sfida non va come previsto quando i due si innamorano.
Il punto di forza del romanzo secondo me è senza dubbio l’ambientazione: il circo è descritto come un luogo incantato, in cui vengono minuziosamente ritratti i colori, i profumi dei cibi, la consistenza dei tessuti e dei materiali. I padiglioni ricchi di trucchi sovrannaturali sono deliziosi, e i capitoli descritti in modo da far sentire il lettore come un avventore del circo sono estremamente suggestivi.
Detto questo, devo ammettere che la trama non mi ha colpita particolarmente: la storia era narrata attraverso diversi punti di vista, con salti temporali anche molto consistenti (dell’ordine di vent’anni). Questo rendeva la narrazione molto frammentata, e personalmente ho faticato a trovare una linea narrativa che mi avvincesse.
Uno dei personaggi, Bailey, viene presentato quasi come un protagonista, ma poi il suo ruolo si risolve in quattro e quattr’otto.
Nonostante il romanzo ruotasse intorno alla storia d’amore, non mi ha convinto molto la ragione per cui i due fossero così tormentati: i due innamorati infatti passano la maggior parte del tempo insieme a dirsi che non possono stare insieme finché c’è questa sfida tra di loro… ma perché no? Non ho capito perché dovessero ricorrere a soluzioni sempre più drammatiche quando l’impressione era che avrebbero potuto semplicemente starsene tranquilli nel circo per altri decenni a tirare fuori un trucchetto ogni tanto senza che nessuno dicesse loro niente, tanto erano vaghi i termini del gioco.
Nel complesso, nonostante abbia adorato il mondo in cui i personaggi si muovevano e mi sia anche io incantato di fronte alle meraviglie del circo del titolo, ho trovato la storia in sé un po’ deludente. Sono tuttavia curiosa di leggere altri romanzi dell’autrice, perché tra le pagine si intuiscono grandi potenzialità e talento.

In late 19th century England, two wizards, Hector Bowen, known as Prospero, and the mysterious man in grey A.H., face each other by devising a challenge between their pupils: Prospero’s daughter, Celia, will face Marco, an orphan chosen by A.H., in a game apparently devoid of rules, in which the two adversaries initially don’t know each other’s identity. To this end, the “Cirque des Rêves” is built, a magical night circus that soon gathers a following of fans. But the challenge doesn’t go as planned when the two fall in love.
The strong point of the novel, in my opinion, is undoubtedly the setting: the circus is described as an enchanted place, where the colours, the scents of food, the texture of fabrics and materials are meticulously portrayed. The pavilions full of supernatural tricks are delightful, and the chapters described in a way that makes the reader feel like a circus adventurer are extremely suggestive.
Having said that, I must admit that the plot didn’t particularly strike me: the story was told through different points of view, with even very substantial time jumps (of the order of twenty years). This made the narrative very fragmented, and personally I had a hard time finding a storyline that would draw me closer.
One of the characters, Bailey, is presented almost as a protagonist, but then his role is resolved very quickly.
Although the novel revolved around the romance, I wasn’t very convinced why the two lovers were so tormented: they spend most of their time together saying they can’t be together as long as there’s this challenge between them… but why not? I didn’t understand why they had to resort to more and more dramatic solutions, when the impression was that they could just sit quietly in the circus for another few decades and pull a trick every now and then without anyone protesting, since the terms of the game were so vague.
All in all, although I loved the world the characters were moving around in and I was also enchanted by the wonders of the circus of the title, I found the story itself a bit disappointing. However, I’m curious to read more of the author’s novels, because there is great potential and talent in the pages.
