“Star Trek- Lower Decks” è una serie animata, composta da dieci episodi, appartenente all’universo di “Star Trek”, trasmessa da CBS All Access nel 2020 e disponibile in Italia dal 2021 sulla piattaforma Amazon Prime Video.
La trama si svolge nel 2380, quindi dopo la serie “The Next Generation” e i relativi film, sulla nave stella USS Cerritos, ma, a differenza delle precedenti, segue le vicende di quattro membri dei ponti bassi (Lower Decks, per l’appunto), la ribelle Beckett Mariner, il ligio al dovere Brad Boimler e i due più nerd D’Vana Tendi e Sam Rutherford.
La serie tv si pone come un omaggio per i fan e punta all’intento parodico della serie; ogni puntata è un riferimento alle precedenti serie e gioca a prenderle in giro. Non so se come prodotto possa essere apprezzato appieno se non si è fan, in quanto le citazioni sono davvero molte; gli stessi personaggi della plancia sono una versione sfigata e parodica degli eroi delle serie più famose. La Cerritos è una nave stellare che vorrebbe essere l’Enterprise, ma viene chiamata solo per missioni minori, non è aggiornata e ha strumenti già diventati obsoleti; persino Q, nella sua fugace apparizione, non viene considerato tra un problema e l’altro.
La scelta stessa dei protagonisti, membri cioè dei ponti bassi, relegati a ruoli di pulizia, ordinaria amministrazione e scartoffie, è una parodia delle serie classiche e, secondo me, funziona molto bene.
Boimler è il primo personaggio che vediamo: studioso, diligente e leccapiedi sogna di diventare un giorno un ufficiale importante, ma si scontra con l’altra protagonista, Beckett Mariner, che è l’opposto di lui: in gamba, ribelle e con una famiglia importante (la madre è il capitano, il padre un ammiraglio), sa fare tutto nella flotta e tutti non vedono l’ora di promuoverla, mentre lei vuole restare testardamente ai piani bassi. Gli altri due personaggi che seguiamo rappresentano la parte scientifica dell’equipaggio: D’Vana Tendi è un’orioniana che fa l’assistente medico, mentre Rutherford è un ingegnere con un impianto cyborg potenziato, che però non riesce ad usare perfettamente.
Se tutti rappresentano un po’ l’elemento secondario e sfigato, il personaggio che mi ha convinto meno e che non mi ha permesso di apprezzare le serie fino in fondo è stato Mariner: l’ho odiata ogni secondo, in quanto non perdeva mai. Era sempre la più intelligente, la più in gamba e non sbagliava mai, non davvero, se non per scelta. Non faceva carriera perché “era diversa dagli altri, più furba, più ribelle di tutti… onestamente non l’ho sopportata proprio e l’ho trovata finta e raccomandata. Boimler e gli altri, con i loro marcati difetti e una sfortuna fantozziana, mi hanno conquistata molto di più.
In conclusione, una serie breve, brillante e divertente, molto diversa dagli originali ma comunque apprezzabile: la consiglio a tutti i fan di Star Trek (anche solo per il cameo di Riker e Deanna).
“Star Trek- Lower Decks” is an animated series of ten episodes, belonging to the “Star Trek” universe, broadcast by CBS All Access in 2020.
The plot takes place in 2380, so after the series “The Next Generation” and the related movies, on the starship USS Cerritos, but, unlike the previous ones, it follows the events of four members of the Lower Decks, the rebel Beckett Mariner, the dutiful Brad Boimler and the two nerds D’Vana Tendi and Sam Rutherford.
The TV series stands as a tribute to the fans and revolves around the parodic intent of the series; each episode is a reference to previous series and makes fun of them. I don’t know if as a product it can be fully appreciated if you are not a fan, as the references are really a lot; the same characters of the bridge are a lame and parodic version of the heroes of the most famous series. The Cerritos is a starship that wants to be the Enterprise, but it is called only for minor missions, it’s not updated and has instruments that have already become obsolete; even Q, in his fleeting appearance, is not considered between one problem and another.
The very choice of protagonists, i.e. members of the lower decks, relegated to roles of cleaning, ordinary administration and paperwork, is a parody of the classic series and, in my opinion, it works very well.
Boimler is the first character we see: studious, diligent, and lecherous, he dreams of one day becoming an important officer, but he clashes with the other main character, Beckett Mariner, who is the opposite of him: smart, rebellious, and with an important family (her mother is the captain, her father an admiral), she knows how to move in the fleet and everyone can’t wait to promote her, while she stubbornly wants to stay at the bottom. The other two characters we follow represent the scientific side of the crew: D’Vana Tendi is an Orionian medical assistant, while Rutherford is an engineer with an upgraded cyborg implant, but he can’t use it very well.
While they all represent a bit of the secondary, lame element, the character that convinced me the least and didn’t allow me to appreciate the series to the fullest was Mariner: I hated her every second because she never lose. She was always the smartest, the fittest and never made a mistake, not really, if not by choice. She didn’t get ahead because “she was different from everyone else”, smarter, more rebellious than everyone else…I honestly couldn’t stand her and thought she came out as fake. Boimler and the others, with their pronounced flaws and bad luck, were much more sympathetic.
In conclusion, a short, brilliant and funny series, very different from the originals but still appreciable: I recommend it to all Star Trek fans (Riker and Deanna cameo is gold).
