“Il maialino di Natale” è un romanzo per bambini/ragazzi scritto da J.K. Rowling e pubblicato in Italia dalla Salani Editore.
Jack è un bambino molto sensibile che affronta la separazione dei suoi genitori con un unico punto di riferimento: il suo maialino di pezza, chiamato Mimalino, detto Lino. Il suo conforto, però, per dispetto viene spinto fuori dal finestrino dalla sua sorellastra la vigilia di Natale e… si perde, apparentemente impossibile da ritrovare. Quando gli regalano un “sostituto”, un altro maialino di pezza, Jack giura che ritroverà il suo amico originale e per questo si addentra in una fantastica Terra dei Perduti, dove vengono reclusi gli oggetti persi, dimenticati e mai ritrovati. Ad aiutarlo è proprio il maialino sostituto che lui detesta e che lo porterà nella terra dei rimpianti e gli farà capire quanto le persone diano per scontato i propri oggetti.
Il romanzo è pensato per essere una favola di Natale per bambini e sicuramente riesce nel suo intento: i giocattoli, gli oggetti perduti non sono che un pretesto per parlare della perdita, dell’assenza, del senso di malinconia che ogni persona, grande o bambino, si trova ad affrontare. Non mancano né i sentimenti e né le battute e, proprio per questo, riesce ad essere un libro perfetto per ragazzi, cioè leggibile ad ogni età con differenti chiavi di lettura.
Sebbene la Terra dei Perduti sia un luogo di rimpianto e desolazione, non nego che avrei voluto visitarla: so che lì c’è il mio orecchino perso che aspetta, così come molti altri oggetti che ancora non ho ritrovato. Come ogni buon fantasy, la voglia di esplorare il mondo che l’autrice ha costruito supera l’orrore e la paura per quello che ci potrebbe essere e questo secondo me è uno dei grandi talenti della Rowling.
Lo consiglio assolutamente per tutte le età: se amate lo stile dell’autrice e il suo modo mai banale di affrontare i problemi dei ragazzi, non resterete delusi. In questa avventura vi faranno compagnia angeli di Natale mezzi rotti, una scatola portapranzo rinsecchita, una bussola rotta e soprattutto un maialino di Natale.
“The Christmas Pig” is a children’s/middle-grade novel written by J.K. Rowling and illustrated by Jim Field.
Jack is a very sensitive child who faces the separation of his parents with only one point of reference: his stuffed pig, called Dur Pig, known as DP. His comfort, however, out of spite is pushed out the window by his half-sister on Christmas Eve and got… lost, seemingly impossible to find again. When he is given a “replacement”, another stuffed pig, Jack swears that he will find his original friend, and so he enters a fantastic Land of the Lost, where lost, forgotten and never found objects are confined. Helping him is the replacement pig he hates, who will take him to the land of regrets and make him realize how much people take their objects for granted.
The novel is intended to be a Christmas story for children and it certainly succeeds in its intent: the toys, the lost objects are just a pretext to talk about loss, absence, the sense of melancholy that every person, child or adult, is faced with. There is no lack of feelings or jokes and, precisely for this reason, it succeeds in being a perfect book for children, that is, readable at any age with different reading keys.
Although the Land of the Lost is a place of regret and desolation, I won’t deny that I would have loved to visit it: I know that there is my lost earring waiting there, as well as many other items that I have yet to find. Like any good fantasy, the eagerness to explore the world the author has built outweighs the horror and fear of what might be there, and this in my opinion is one of Rowling’s great talents.
I absolutely recommend it for all ages: if you love the author’s style and her never trivial way of dealing with children’s problems, you will not be disappointed. In this adventure you will be accompanied by half-broken Christmas angels, a dried-up lunchbox, a broken compass and, above all, a little Christmas pig.
