“Hunger Games- La ballata dell’usignolo e del serpente” è il film tratto dall’omonimo libro di Suzanne Collins del 2020, prequel della fortunata trilogia, ed è uscito nelle sale il 15 novembre 2023.
Il film è ambientato dieci anni dopo la vittoria di Capitol City sui Distretti e vede il personaggio di Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), futuro presidente di Panem e principale antagonista della trilogia, come un giovane di una famiglia in piena decadenza, che cerca di sopravvivere senza fare scoprire ai suoi pari che è senza un soldo. Vive con la cugina Tigris (Hunter Schafer) e con la anziana nonna (Fionnula Flannaghan), ma sogna di vincere il Premio Plinth per il migliore studente dell’Accademia, che gli permetterebbe di continuare gli studi in Università. Nonostante l’antagonismo del rettore Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), il suo sogno sembra vicino, ma viene annunciato a sorpresa che quest’anno il premio andrà al miglior mentore degli Hunger Games. I famosi giochi della trilogia qui sono in pieno declino, poiché nessuno li guarda più, e gli studenti dell’ultimo anno di accademia sono chiamati a cercare di risollevare le sorti dei giochi facendo da mentore ai ventiquattro contendenti. A Snow toccherà la bella cantante Lucy Grey Baird (Rachel Zegler) del distretto 12, carismatica quanto debole in battaglia: sarà proprio a lui a lottare per fare sì che lei abbia le migliori chance di sopravvivenza. Accanto a Snow, la enigmatica e inquietante dottoressa Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis) e Seianus Plinth (Josh Andrés Rivera), ragazzo idealista proveniente dai distretti.
Il film è secondo me un ottimo adattamento del romanzo, che già mi era piaciuto molto. Sicuramente la discesa al lato oscuro di Snow era difficile da rendere al cinema, senza poter leggere i suoi pensieri, ma io penso sia risultata molto coinvolgente, complice un attore protagonista davvero molto bravo.
L’elemento delle canzoni qui risulta davvero coinvolgente grazie alla bravissima Rachel Zegler, che fa prendere vita alle ballate del libro; in particolare, quella dell’albero dell’impiccato strapperà commozione ai fan della trilogia.
Il cast è eccezionale: oltre ai bravissimi protagonisti, troviamo il premio Oscar Viola Davis (da brividi come nel libro) e un Peter Dinklange secondo me meraviglioso. Anche i personaggi minori riescono ad essere delineati grazie a un cast davvero azzeccato e superlativo.
La pellicola è divisa in tre parti: Il mentore, il premio e il pacificatore. Scandiscono la storia e dividono la parabola discendente del personaggio di Coriolanus.
Nonostante il film sia piuttosto lungo, ho trovato che non avesse punti morti e che scorresse velocemente, senza mai annoiare.
La città distrutta, la lenta spettacolarizzazione dei giochi, ma soprattutto i sensi di colpa dei vari personaggi emergono in modo chiaro e fedele, cosa che credo piacerà ai fan del libro.
Per farla breve, se avete amato la saga qui troverete soddisfazione. Diversi i rimandi per i fan alla trilogia (la passione per il veleno, le canzoni, la radice Katniss, le ghiandaie imitatrici) che non potete perdervi.

“The Hunger Games- The Ballad of songbirds and snakes” is the film based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 book, a prequel to the successful trilogy, and it has been released in theatres on 17 November 2023.
The film is set ten years after Capitol City’s victory over the Districts and sees the character of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the future president of Panem and the trilogy’s main antagonist, as a young man from a family in the midst of decay, trying to survive without having his peers discover that he is penniless. He lives with his cousin Tigris (Hunter Schafer) and his elderly grandmother (Fionnula Flannaghan), but dreams of winning the Plinth Prize for the best student at the Academy, which would allow him to continue his studies at the University. Despite the antagonism of Dean Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), his dream seems close, but a surprise announcement is made that this year’s prize will go to the best mentor in the Hunger Games. The famous trilogy games here are in full decline, as no one watches them any more, and the final year students of the academy are called upon to try to revive the games’ fortunes by mentoring the twenty-four contenders. Snow picked the beautiful singer Lucy Grey Baird (Rachel Zegler) from District 12, as charismatic as she is weak in battle: it will be up to him to make sure she has the best chance of survival. Alongside Snow are the enigmatic and disturbing Dr Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis) and Seianus Plinth (Josh Andrés Rivera), an idealistic boy from the districts.
In my opinion, the film is a very good adaptation of the novel, which I already enjoyed very much. Certainly Snow’s descent to the dark side was difficult to render on a movie, without being able to read his thoughts, but I thought it was very engaging, thanks to a very good lead actor.
The song element here is really engaging thanks to the very good Rachel Zegler, who makes the book’s ballads come to life; in particular, the one about the hanged man’s tree will move fans of the trilogy.
The cast is exceptional: in addition to the excellent leads, we find Oscar winner Viola Davis (as creepy as in the book) and a wonderful Peter Dinklange. Even the minor characters manage to be delineated thanks to a truly apt and superlative cast.
The movie is divided into three parts: The Mentor, The Prize and The Peacemaker. They punctuate the story and divide the descending parable of the character of Coriolanus.
Although the film is rather long, I found it had no dead points and flowed quickly, never boring.
The destroyed city, the slow spectacle of the games, but especially the guilt feelings of the various characters emerge clearly and faithfully, which I think fans of the book will like.
In short, if you loved the saga you will find satisfaction here. There are several references for fans to the trilogy (the passion for poison, the songs, the Katniss root, the jabberjays) that you cannot miss.
