“Testimone d’accusa” è un racconto di Agatha Christie pubblicato nel 1925 e disponibile in molte raccolte, tra cui “Testimone d’accusa e altre storie” (Mondadori).
La storia è basata sul processo a Leonard Vole, arrestato con l’accusa di omicidio di Emily French, un’anziana donna molto ricca e che lo aveva fatto principale beneficiario della sua eredità. Il protagonista, l’avvocato difensore Sir Wilfrid Robarts, lo crede innocente e cerca di costruire un caso solido; tuttavia, la donna che dovrebbe confermare l’alibi di Leonard, la moglie Romaine, decide di testimoniare per l’accusa.
Il racconto scorre rapido, è affascinante e riesce a coinvolgere e lasciare un segno, nonostante la brevità; non dovrebbe sorprendere che sia stato oggetto di diverse trasposizioni televisive e cinematografiche, alcune meglio riuscite di altre. Recentemente ho visto un adattamento del 2016 mortalmente noioso ed esasperato (la storia di un racconto trascinata per ben due episodi lunghi), diretto da Julian Jarrold e interpretato da attori fantastici come Kim Cattrall e Toby Jones, ma non all’altezza dell’opera originale.
La cosa che colpisce di più, come in molte opere della Christie, è la bravura con cui i personaggi vengono delineati in poche righe e il colpo di scena; ancora una volta, il finale è inaspettato e affascinante.
Lo consiglio agli amanti della Christie: è un gioiellino da non perdere.
“Witness for the Prosecution” is a short story written by Agatha Christie published in 1925 and available in many collections, including “The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories. ” (Dodd, Mead & Company).
The story is based on the trial of Leonard Vole, who was arrested on charges of the murder of Emily French, a very rich old woman who had made him the main beneficiary of her inheritance. The protagonist, defence lawyer Sir Wilfrid Robarts, believes him innocent and tries to build a solid case; however, the woman who should confirm Leonard’s alibi, his wife Romaine, decides to testify for the prosecution.
The short story flows quickly, it is fascinating and manages to involve and leave a mark, despite its brevity; it should come as no surprise that it has been the subject of several television and film transpositions, some more successful than others. I recently saw a deadlyly dull and exasperated 2016 adaptation (the story of a story dragged through two long episodes), directed by Julian Jarrold and starring fantastic actors like Kim Cattrall and Toby Jones, but not as good as the original work.
What is most striking, as in many of Christie’s works, is the skill with which the characters are outlined in a few lines and the twist; once again, the ending is unexpected and fascinating.
I recommend it to Christie lovers: it is a jewel not to be missed.
