“Starsight” è un romanzo di fantascienza scritto da Brandon Sanderson e uscito a Gennaio 2020 con la casa editrice Armenia; si tratta del seguito del fortunato e bellissimo “Skyward”, di cui vi avevamo parlato qui.
La spaceopera riprende più o meno da dove avevamo lasciato Spensa, cioè su Detritus, pianeta in cui gli umani sono confinati dai Krell e costretti a lottare quotidianamente per la propria sopravvivenza.
In questo volume, tuttavia, il focus è completamente diverso, così come l’ambientazione; infatti, finalmente, Spensa riuscirà a volare sotto copertura fuori da Detritus, fino a raggiungere la stazione di Starsight, dove viene catapultata in un mondo nuovo, letteralmente. Se nel primo eravamo sempre su Detritus, qui seguiamo Spensa per Starsight e, insieme a lei, impariamo a conoscere popoli nuovi e, lentamente, a comprendere il loro punto di vista.
Skyward parlava di sopravvivenza, di guerra, del bisogno primordiale di alzare la testa e combattere; Starsight racconta invece del confronto, della comprensione e, secondo me, per questo è un secondo volume bellissimo, in grado di ribaltare la prospettiva del lettore e di accompagnarlo verso una nuova scoperta insieme alla protagonista.
Diversamente dal primo, ho trovato che il ritmo fosse più discontinuo: la prima parte mi è sembrata più sottotono rispetto alla seconda, e i problemi e battibecchi di accettazione che caratterizzavano Skyward mi sono un po’ mancati; tuttavia, i nuovi personaggi alieni mi sono entrati subito nel cuore e, in un certo senso, ho trovato la loro caratterizzazione più matura.
L’edizione italiana è stupenda, sono felice di aver preso il cartaceo: l‘unica critica è legata alla presentazione del libro. Non leggetela, perché è tutto uno spoiler pazzesco di tre quarti del romanzo! Sono andata a controllare, in inglese non era così. Per fortuna non la leggo mai, ma è lì, in bella vista sulla seconda di copertina: se l’avessi letta mi sarei infuriata, perché rovina metà dei colpi di scena.
In conclusione, un romanzo avvincente e divertente, degno sequel dello stupendo Skyward. Se avete letto il primo, non potete perdervelo; se ancora non conoscete questa saga, posso solo dire di correre a recuperarla!
“Starsight” is a sci-fi novel written by Brandon Sanderson and released at the end of 2019 by Delacorte Press; it’s the sequel to the famous and beautiful “Skyward”.
The space opera picks up more or less where we left Spensa, on Detritus, a planet where humans are confined by the Krell and forced to fight daily for their survival.
In this volume, however, the focus is completely different, as is the setting; finally, Spensa will manage to fly undercover out of Detritus, until she reaches the Starsight station, where she’s catapulted into a new world, literally. If in the first one we were always on Detritus, here we follow Spensa to Starsight and, together with her, we learn to know new people and, slowly, to understand their point of view.
Skyward focused on survival, war and the primordial need to raise our heads and fight; Starsight, instead, is about confrontation, understanding and, in my opinion, that’s why this is an amazing sequel, able to overturn the reader’s perspective and to accompany them towards a new discovery, together with the protagonist.
Unlike the first, I found the rhythm more discontinuous: the first part seemed more subdued than the second, and I missed a bit the problems and discussions about acceptance that characterized Skyward; however, the new alien characters immediately touched my heart and, in a way, I found their characterization more mature.
In conclusion, a compelling and funny novel, worthy sequel to the wonderful Skyward. If you’ve read the first one, you can’t miss it; if you don’t know this saga yet, I can only invite you to hurry up and read it!
