Cosa non mi ha convinto di “Racconti di Hogwarts: prodezze e passatempi pericolosi” (Pottermore Presents Vol. 1) d J.K. Rowling/ Review of “Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies” by J.K. Rowling

“Racconti di Hogwarts: prodezze e passatempi pericolosi” è una raccolta di racconti di J.K. Rowling dell’universo di “Harry Potter”, usciti su Pottermore gratuitamente e, in seguito, pubblicati dalla Pottermore Publishing nel 2016.

Il primo volume, che ho avuto modo di scaricare gratuitamente tramite Amazon Prime Reading, raccoglie le storie di Minerva McGranitt, Remus Lupin, Sibilla Cooman e Silvanus Kettleburn (l’insegnante di Cura delle Creature Magiche prima di Hagrid).

Vi avviso, fan di vecchia data, che il testo utilizza la traduzione nuova (quindi con McGonagall e Trelawney), per cui potreste rimanere un attimo spiazzati.

Ammetto che avevo già letto tutti i racconti quando erano usciti su Pottermore, ma trovo molto comodo trovarli raggruppati in unico volume. C’è anche un seguito, con i restanti su altri personaggi, dove potrete trovare altri aneddoti sui personaggi della saga.

Si tratta di una raccolta che non può essere in alcun modo letta separatamente dalla saga: è pensata per essere un “di più” per tutti i Potterhead davvero affezionati. Io sono una super fan della saga, ho letto tutto quello che si poteva e anche di più, interviste, fan fiction, libri aggiuntivi… e credo sia questo il motivo per cui non mi sono divertita molto.

Il racconto dedicato alla McGranitt è molto carino, ma, sono onesta, negli anni ho letto fan fiction nettamente migliori.

Le storie sono tutte molto piatte, completamente divise tra “personaggi che sono simpatici alla Rowling” e “Personaggi che le stanno antipatici”. I primi hanno storie bellissime, quasi agiografiche: genitori meravigliosi, nobili, profondi, tutti crescono nelle difficoltà fino a diventare straordinari agli occhi di ogni persona. I secondi, per sicurezza, sono mediocri o pessimi in tutto, magari fin da bambini, come una sorta di predestinazione. In tutta sincerità, avrei preferito non sapere il background che si era costruita su questi personaggi, perché sono rimasta molto delusa dalla piattezza di tutta la narrazione.

Sicuramente è un mio limite, un mio problema dovuto ad anni di bellissime fan fiction, ma è dai tempi del tremendo “prologo” che penso “ok, è stata una saga meravigliosa: non aggiungiamo più nulla, per favore”. Chissà, magari ci saranno dei seguiti o dei prequel, ma dopo tutto questo non ne sento davvero più il bisogno.

Una lettura imprescindibile per i fan della saga? Sì, probabilmente. La consiglio? Ehm, non troppo.

I admit that I had already read all the stories when they came out on Pottermore, but I find it very convenient to find them grouped in one volume. There is also a sequel, with the rest on other characters, where you can find more anecdotes about the characters in the saga.
This is a collection that can in no way be read separately from the saga: it’s designed to be  “more” for all the really fond Potterheads. I’m a super fan of the saga, I read everything you could and even more, interviews, fan fiction, additional books… and I think that’s why I haven’t had a lot of fun.
McGonagall’s story is very nice, but, I’m honest, I’ve read much better fan fiction over the years.

The stories are all very flat, completely divided between “characters Rowling likes ” and “characters she dislikes”. The former have beautiful stories, almost hagiographic: wonderful parents, noble, deep, all grow up in difficulties to become extraordinary in the eyes of each person. The second ones, just to be sure, are mediocre or bad in everything, maybe since childhood, as a sort of predestination. In all honesty, I would have preferred not to know the background that had been built on these characters, because I was very disappointed by the flatness of the whole narrative.

Surely it’s my limit, my problem due to years of beautiful fan fiction, but it’s from the time of the terrible “prologue” that I think “ok, it was a wonderful saga: let’s not add anything more, please”. Who knows, maybe there will be sequels or prequels, but after all this I really don’t feel the need anymore.
An essential reading for fans of the saga? Yes, probably. Should I recommend it? Uh, not with enthusiasm.
