Perché guardare “La regina degli scacchi” (Netflix) / Review of “The Queen’s gambit” (Netflix)

“La Regina degli Scacchi” è una miniserie di 7 episodi disponibile in streaming su Netflix, basata sull’omonimo romanzo di Walter Tevis.

Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) ha solo otto anni quando la madre rimane uccisa in un incidente d’auto. La bambina viene mandata in un orfanatrofio, dove il custode, il sig. Shaibel (Bill Camp), le insegna a giocare a scacchi e presto si rende conto che Beth ha un talento eccezionale.

Alle orfane vengono distribuite dei tranquillanti, e Beth ne sviluppa una dipendenza.

Anche quando verrà adottata da una coppia in crisi, i Wheatley, Beth non abbandonerà il proprio sogno di diventare una gran maestra di scacchi, e continuerà a progredire nelle più importanti competizioni del mondo, sempre lottando con la dipendenza da farmaci e alcool.

Questa miniserie è un piccolo gioiello, che avvince il lettore con un ritmo sempre più incalzante, proprio come in una partita a scacchi per assicurarsi la vittoria della sua attenzione.

Anya Taylor-Joy regala una performance magnetica, complice sia il suo viso dal fascino vagamente alieno, sia una sceneggiatura che non lascia spazio a cliché. Indimenticabile la sua posa enigmatica a mani intrecciate che ricorda quella della pedina della Regina.

Ho apprezzato moltissimo come i rapporti tra i personaggi non fossero mai banali, e come anche le figure minori fossero ben delineate.

Una novità interessante rispetto ad altre serie e film sullo sport è lo spirito estremamente sportivo dei giocatori di scacchi: nonostante Beth stracci pesantemente molti di loro, questi spesso la ringraziano dopo per aver contribuito a migliorarli come giocatori e sono felici di sostenerla e aiutarla a battere i successivi avversari.

Questo atteggiamento corretto e privo di rancore viene anche rispecchiato nelle vicende sentimentali di Beth: nessuno dei suoi possibili partner si dimostra mai possessivo o vendicativo, anzi, sono tutti sinceramente affezionati a lei e si preoccupano per il suo futuro.

I personaggi femminili al di fuori di Beth non sono molti, ma si distinguono l’orfana Jolene (Moses Ingram) che riapparirà nelle ultime puntate, e la madre adottiva Alma (Marielle Heller); entrambe hanno un arco narrativo interessante e non stereotipato.

Gli spettatori che sono cresciuti con Harry Potter riconosceranno l’attore che ha interpretato Dudley Dursley, cioè Harry Melling, per una volta nel ruolo di un bravo ragazzo, e i fan di Love Actually forse saranno un po’ straniati nel vedere il piccolo Sam interpretare il rubacuori Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster).

Una menzione particolare va ai costumi: ogni mise indossata da Beth dalla terza puntata in poi è un piccolo capolavoro di moda anni ’60 e ’70 che culmina negli abiti indossati durante il torneo di Parigi.

Vale anche la pena ricordare che tutte le partite che vediamo sullo schermo sono basate su reali match tra giocatori di fama mondiale e che la serie è stata lodata per la sua accuratezza nel rappresentare le strategie degli scacchi.

Consigliatissimo a chi cerca una serie appassionante e dallo stile impeccabile.

Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is only eight years old when her mother is killed in a car accident. She is sent to an orphanage where the janitor, Mr. Shaibel (Bill Camp), teaches her to play chess and soon realizes that Beth is exceptionally talented.

The orphans are given tranquilizers, and Beth develops an addiction to them.

Even when adopted by a dysfunctional couple, the Wheatleys, Beth will not give up her dream of becoming a chess grandmaster, and will continue to progress in the world’s most important competitions, always struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

This miniseries is a little gem, which captivates the viewer with an increasingly fast pace, just like in a chess game to ensure the victory of their attention.

Anya Taylor-Joy gives a magnetic performance, thanks both to her face with a vaguely alien charm and a script that leaves no room for clichés. Unforgettable is her enigmatic pose with intertwined hands, reminiscent of chess’ Queen.

I appreciated how the relationships between the characters were never stereotyped, and how even the minor figures were well outlined.

An interesting novelty compared to other sports series and films is the extremely honest spirit of the chess players: although Beth heavily beats a lot of them, they often thank her afterwards for helping to improve them as players and are happy to support her and help her beat her next opponents.

This correct and rancor-free attitude is also reflected in Beth’s sentimental stories: none of her possible partners are ever possessive or vindictive, on the contrary, they are all genuinely fond of her and worry about her future.

The female characters outside of Beth are not many, but the orphan Jolene (Moses Ingram) who will reappear in the last episodes, and the adoptive mother Alma (Marielle Heller) stand out; both have an interesting and non-stereotypical narrative arc.

Viewers who grew up with Harry Potter will recognize the actor who played Dudley Dursley, Harry Melling, as a good guy for once, and Love Actually fans may be a little weirded out to see little Sam playing the heartbreaker Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster).

A special mention goes to the costumes: every outfit worn by Beth from the third episode onwards is a small masterpiece of 1960s and 1970s fashion that culminates in the clothes worn during the Paris tournament.

It is also worth remembering that all the games we see on screen are based on real matches between world famous players and that the series has been praised for its accuracy in representing chess strategies.

It is highly recommended for those looking for an exciting series with an impeccable style.
