“Battlestar Galactica” è un franchise remake della serie “Galactica” del 1979 e comprende una miniserie-prologo (2003) e una serie televisiva composta da quattro stagioni, andata in onda dal 2004 al 2009 (in Italia dal 2009 al 2010, ora disponibile interamente su Amazon Prime Video).
La storia parla della base stellare Galactica che, all’inizio della miniserie, comandata da William Adamo, sta per essere dismessa dal servizio e trasformata in un museo: la storica nave, infatti, era stata progettata per non andare mai in rete e poter quindi combattere il nemico mortale delle Dodici Colonie di Kobol, i cyloni, macchine ribellatesi all’uomo e che avevano quasi sterminato l’umanità quarant’anni prima.
Le cose precipitano quando i cyloni, dopo una loro scomparsa di decenni, decidono di attaccare le colonie, sterminando tutti gli umani e lasciando poche decine di migliaia di superstiti. I cyloni si sono infatti evoluti, hanno assunto forma umanoide e si sono infilitrati sulla colonia Caprica, dove l’avvenente numero 6 ha sedotto il famoso scienziato Gaius Baltar, facendosi dare i codici della difesa.
Il Galactica, proprio per la sua natura così obsoleta, è l’unica nave stellare militare a salvarsi e, dopo aver prestato soccorso alle navi civili, con la sottosegretaria all’istruzione Laura Roslin, ora costretta a giurare da Presidente, decidono di andarsene per cercare la pace nella leggendaria tredicesima colonia: la Terra. Il viaggio che li attende, tuttavia, sarà pieno di insidie, con i cyloni alle costole e infiltrati nelle loro fila, mentre l’umanità, così poco numerosa, è appesa ad un filo. In questa avventura si distinguono i soldati Lee Adamo, Kara Thrace, Sharon Valerii, Galen Tyrol e il numero due del comandante, Saul Tigh.
Premetto che avevo iniziato questa serie con le migliori aspettative, che, nella prima stagione, sono andate deluse. La trama è molto bella ma il ritmo era a dir poco soporifero: non capitava davvero nulla fino all’ultimo episodio (praticamente poteva esserci tranquillamente solo quello dopo la miniserie). Stesso discorso con la seconda stagione, niente di fatto fino all’ultimo, incredibile episodio. Ero tentata di abbandonare, ma mi sono decisa a proseguire e ho fatto bene. La terza stagione segna un cambio deciso di rotta nella trame e nel ritmo, grazie anche all’introduzione di attori molto pià bravi e intensi, come Lucy Lawless e Dean Stockwell. Sebbene una parte centrale un po’ morta a metà, mi sono ricreduta e appassionata, fino ad arrivare alla quarta stagione, complessivamente la mia preferita e che ho guardato con interesse spasmodico. All’ultimo episodio, mi sono addirittura commossa.
Mi sento di consigliarlo agli appassionati di fantascienza con il consiglio di andare avanti un po’ velocemente nelle prime due stagioni perché merita davvero.

The story is about the Galactica starbase that, at the beginning of the miniseries, commanded by William Adama, is about to be decommissioned from service and turned into a museum: the historic ship, in fact, was designed to never sail and thus be able to fight the mortal enemy of the Twelve United Colonies of Kobol, the Cylons, machines that rebelled against man and had almost exterminated humanity forty years earlier.
Things come to a head when the Cylons, after disappearing for decades, decide to attack the colonies, exterminating all humans and leaving a few tens of thousands of survivors. In fact, the Cylons have evolved, taken humanoid form and infiltrated the Caprica colony, where the attractive Number 6 has seduced the famous scientist Gaius Baltar into giving her the defense codes.
The Galactica, precisely because it is so obsolete, is the only military starship that is saved, and after providing aid to civilian ships, with the Secretary of Education Laura Roslin, now sworn in as President, they decide to leave to seek peace in the legendary thirteenth colony: Earth. The journey ahead of them, however, will be full of pitfalls, with the Cylons on their tail and infiltrators in their ranks, while humanity, so few in number, hangs by a thread. Soldiers Lee Adama, Kara Thrace, Sharon Valerii, Galen Tyrol and the commander’s number two, Saul Tigh, stand out in this adventure. First of all, I must say that I started this series with the best expectations, which, in the first season, were disappointed. The plot is very good but the rhythm was soporific to say the least: nothing really happened until the last episode (basically there could have been only that one after the miniseries and the story still would have made sense). Same with the second season, nothing happened until the last, incredible episode. I was tempted to give up, but I decided to continue and it was a good choice. The third season marks a decisive change of course in the plots and pace, thanks to the introduction of much better, intense actors, such as Lucy Lawless and Dean Stockwell. Although the central part of the show was a bit slow in the middle, I changed my mind and got hooked, until the fourth season, overall my favorite and that I watched with spasmodic interest. By the last episode, I was even emotional.
I feel like recommending it to science fiction fans with the advice to fast forward a bit through the first two seasons because it’s really worth it.
