“Il malefico caso Alstor contro Redding” e “L’ultima vita del principe Alastor” sono i due romanzi della dilogia per ragazzi scritta da Alexandra Bracken e pubblicata in Italia da “Il battello a vapore”.
Prosper Redding viene da una famiglia fortunata e facoltosa, che si aspetta da lui il massimo; sfortunatamente lui non riesce a essere all’altezza delle aspettative e si sente una costante delusione. Sua sorella gemella, invece, dopo una lunga malattia cardiaca infantile, sembra essere la stella che lui non riesce a diventare, allontanandosi sempre più da lui.
Le cose peggiorano ulteriormente quando Prosper scopre che la fortuna della sua famiglia è legata ad un patto di trecento anni prima con un demone, che un suo antenato ha sigillato dentro uno dei loro corpi… quello di Prosper. Il ragazzo deve così scappare dalla sua stessa famiglia che pare volerlo uccidere per la gloria eterna e, contemporaneamente, deve sopravvivere alla possessione. Troverà aiuto nella cugina segreta Nell, che lo aiuterà ad avere a che fare con il suo demone interno (in senso letterale).
La dilogia è davvero divertente e si legge tutta d’un fiato. Il primo libro l’ho trovato più simpatico, con la definizione dei vari personaggi: lo sfortunato Prosper, l’eccentrica Nell, ma anche la nonna inquietante e potente, nonché tutta una serie di personaggi fantasy insoliti. Il ritmo era veloce e la storia piacevole e leggera; sicuramente non mi aspettavo nel finale un mega colpo di scena che mi ha davvero strappato un sorriso. Il primo romanzo finisce con un cliffhanger in piena regola, così non ho potuto che passare immediatamente al numero due: la storia e i flashback sono molto interessanti (ho trovato sublime il trattamento del personaggio di Honor Redding, capostipite della famiglia), ma il lungo periodo nel mondo degli spiriti maligni non era tanto nelle mie corde, cionostante ho apprezzato il finale che mi ha soddisfatto.
Ho trovato davvero interessante il rapporto tra Prosper e Alastor, non banale o scontato: Prosper è un ragazzino buono che si ritrova dentro di sé uno spirito malvagio e assetato di rubare anime, entrambi condividono il disgusto reciproco e il senso di essere in trappola, ma trovano il modo di dialogare e alla fine, in un certo senso, anche di collaborare. Alastor è “il cattivo”, il demone da eliminare, il male da eradicare, ma è un personaggio vero e a tutto tondo, con una sua personalità e una sua “morale”, se così si può dire.
In conclusione, una dilogia divertente e fresca, che si legge tutta d’un fiato e che permetterà di far conoscere ai più giovani la penna di Alexandra Bracken, che io trovo ottima.
“The Wicked Case of Alstor v. Redding” and “The Last Life of Prince Alastor” are the two novels in the children’s dilogy written by Alexandra Bracken and published by Disney-Hyperion.
Prosper Redding comes from a fortunate and wealthy family that expects the best from him; unfortunately, he fails to live up to expectations and feels like a constant disappointment. His twin sister, on the other hand, after a long childhood heart disease, seems to be the star he fails to become, growing further and further away from him.
Things get even worse when Prosper discovers that his family’s fortune is tied to a pact three hundred years earlier with a demon, which one of his ancestors sealed inside one of their bodies — Prosper’s. The boy must thus escape from his own family, which seems to want to kill him for eternal glory, and at the same time survive the possession. He will find help from his secret cousin Nell, who will help him deal with his inner demon (in a literal sense).
The dilogy is really entertaining and can be read in one go. I found the first book more likable, with the definition of the various characters: the hapless Prosper, the eccentric Nell, but also the creepy and powerful grandmother, as well as a whole host of unusual fantasy characters. The pace was fast and the story pleasant and light; I certainly did not expect a mega twist in the ending that really brought a smile to my face. The first novel ends with a full-blown cliffhanger, so I had no choice but to immediately move on to number two: the story and flashbacks are very interesting (I found the treatment of the character of Honor Redding, the progenitor of the family, sublime), but the long period in the evil crearures world was not so much in my vein, nevertheless I enjoyed the ending that satisfied me.
I found the relationship between Prosper and Alastor really interesting, not trite or obvious: Prosper is a good little boy who finds himself inside an evil spirit thirsty to steal souls; both share a mutual loathing and a sense of being trapped, but they find a way to converse and eventually, in a sense, even cooperate. Alastor is “the villain,” the demon to be eliminated, the evil to be eradicated, but he is a true and well-rounded character with his own personality and “morals.”
In conclusion, a fun and fresh dilogy that can be read all in one go and will introduce younger readers to Alexandra Bracken’s pen, which I find excellent.
