Recensione del film Netflix “Damsel” /Review of the movie “Damsel”

“Damsel” è un film fantasy del 2024 prodotto da Netflix e diretto da Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

La storia narra della principessa Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown, l’attrice diventata famosa per il ruolo di Undici in Stranger Things) che viene promessa in sposa al principe Henry, del florido regno di Aurea. Dal momento che il regno di Elodie, Inophe, è una terra arida e con la popolazione che rischia di morire di fame per il freddo inverno, la ragazza accetta lieta. La protagonista, insieme alla sorella Floria, il padre Lord Bayford e la matrigna (Angela Bassett), si mettono in viaggio verso Aurea, dove Elodie viene accolta dal principe e dalla Regina Isabelle (Robin Wright). Henry si mostra subito distaccato, cosa che insospettisce la ragazza: tuttavia, dopo un iniziale scambio di vedute, i due sembrano andare molto d’accordo.

L’entusiasmo per il conveniente matrimonio della matrigna di Elodie, Lady Bayford, inizia ad affievolirsi quando nota grande freddezza da parte della regina e quando non riesce a scoprire quali accordi matrimoniali siano stati presi dal marito; la donna cerca invano di convincere Elodie a non sposarsi, ma, non trovando motivazioni convincenti se non un sospetto, la ragazza convola a nozze.

Quello che però accade è che le tradizioni matrimoniali dei regnanti di Aurea si rivelano una maledizione che coinvolge un drago e un labirinto dentro una montagna: Elodie dovrà combattere per la sua sopravvivenza.

Non aggiungo altro alla trama per non fare spoiler, ma il film è divertente e coinvolgente, con una storia carina e insolita. Il cast è notevole, in particolare la presenza di Angela Bassett e di Robin Wright mi hanno convinto subito a guardarlo: peccato solo che si vedano davvero poco! Praticamente il 90% del film ci presenta solo ed esclusivamente Elodie che tenta di sopravvivere con lunghe e talvolta ripetitive scene di azione: sinceramente ho avuto l’impressione che potessero essere tagliate la maggior parte di esse per dare qualche approfondimento in più sugli altri personaggi e la loro storia.

Il drago è sicuramente uno dei punti chiave e credo che piacerà molto agli appassionati del genere perché non è solo una creatura pericolosa e oscura, ma un personaggio a tutto tondo: questo credo sia l’aspetto più interessante di tutto il film.

Un altro particolare che ho apprezzato è il tema della famiglia: il movente dell’azione per Elodie è proteggere chi ama (popolo, sorella, padre) e non viene affrontato come un sacrificio o qualcosa di brutto. La tenerezza con sua sorella, l’evoluzione del rapporto con la matrigna e quello col padre sono fatti, secondo me, molto bene.

Per i miei gusti, avrei gradito molta meno azione (o almeno non sempre le stesse scene) e più trama, ma alla fine la conclusione mi ha soddisfatto e il film l’ho trovato gradevole.

Sicuramente lo consiglio agli appassionati di draghi!

“Damsel” is a 2024 fantasy film produced by Netflix and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

The story tells of Princess Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown, the actress who became famous for her role as Eleven in Stranger Things) who is betrothed to Prince Henry, of the prosperous kingdom of Aurea. Since Elodie’s kingdom, Inophe, is an arid land with a population in danger of starvation due to the cold winter, she happily accepts. Together with her sister Floria, her father Lord Bayford and her stepmother (Angela Bassett), she sets off for Aurea, where Elodie is welcomed by the prince and Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright). Henry is immediately aloof, which makes the girl suspicious: however, after an initial exchange of views, the two seem to get along very well.

The enthusiasm for the convenient marriage of Elodie’s stepmother, Lady Bayford, begins to wane when she notices great coldness on the queen’s part and when she is unable to find out what marriage arrangements have been made by her husband; the woman tries in vain to convince Elodie not to marry, but, finding no convincing reasons other than suspicion, the girl agrees to the wedding.

What happens, however, is that the marriage traditions of the rulers of Aurea turn out to be a curse involving a dragon and a labyrinth inside a mountain: Elodie will have to fight for her survival.

I won’t add anything else to the plot so as not to make spoilers, but the movie is fun and engaging, with a cute and unusual story. The cast is remarkable, in particular the presence of Angela Bassett and Robin Wright convinced me to watch it straight away: it’s just a pity that we see very little of them! Practically 90% of the film presents us only and exclusively with Elodie trying to survive with long and sometimes repetitive action scenes: I honestly had the impression that most of them could have been cut to give some more insight into the other characters and their story.

The dragon is definitely one of the key points and I think that fans of the genre will like it a lot because he is not just a dangerous and dark creature, but a well-rounded character: this I think is the most interesting aspect of the whole movie.

Another detail I appreciated is the theme of family: the motive for action for Elodie is to protect those she loves (people, sister, father) and it is not approached as a sacrifice or something bad. The tenderness with her sister, the evolution of the relationship with her stepmother and that with her father are, in my opinion, very well done.

For my taste, I would have liked a lot less action (or at least not always the same scenes) and more plot, but in the end the conclusion satisfied me and I found the film enjoyable.

Definitely recommend it to dragon fans!
