Dopo un secondo libro che ho faticato a finire e mi aveva lasciata un po’ delusa, “Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows” di Sarah J. Maas torna ad essere pieno di azione, regalando un susseguirsi di colpi di scena.

Bryce, Hunt, Tharion e Ithan devono combattere il dominio degli Asteri, con tutto l’aiuto che riescono a trovare, persino da altre saghe del Maasverse, grazie all’introduzione del multiverso.

Persino il punto di vista di Tharion, che nel precedente volume era estremamente noioso, diventa più interessante grazie all’introduzione di un nuovo personaggio che dà un po’ di vita ai suoi capitoli.

Questo terzo volume della serie ha il compito di chiudere molte delle trame e delle sottotrame precedentemente introdotte, e in questo senso potrebbe sembrare un po’ affrettato. Il crossover con la serie ACOTAR è presente, ma in modo limitato, e alcuni lettori potrebbero trovare il personaggio di Nesta un po’ out of character. Diciamo che il focus è evidentemente sui personaggi di questa serie, come è comprensibile, quindi tutti gli altri fanno dei cameo significativi ma non particolarmente approfonditi.

Il ciclo di formazione di Bryce si compie, con la sua evoluzione da vittima degli eventi a eroina anche politica, però molti dei suoi piani sono confusi e a tratti illogici e il loro successo sembra dipendere più dalla “plot armour” che dalla sua lungimiranza.

Però persino lei sembra una leader capace e ragionevole rispetto ad Ithan, il cui punto di vista è quasi doloroso da leggere per la grande quantità di scelte evidentemente idiote che compie, e che alla fine in qualche modo vengono premiate.

Detto così sembra che sia un libro scritto frettolosamente e in modo superficiale, ma in realtà tutti i suoi difetti non sono stati per me che piccole pecche perchè “Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows” riesce a intrattenere e divertire i lettori. Il libro è ricco di momenti tamarri e avvincenti, che catturano l’attenzione e tengono incollati alle pagine. Sarah J. Maas sa come coinvolgere i suoi lettori, creando un mix di emozioni e azione che rende difficile staccarsi dalla storia.

Non mancano nemmeno le scene romantiche, per i fan del genere.

In definitiva, “Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows” è un libro che consiglio ai fan dell’autrice. Nonostante alcune scelte narrative discutibili e una conclusione che sembra un po’ affrettata, il romanzo riesce a intrattenere grazie all’azione, ai colpi di scena e all’atmosfera coinvolgente che lo caratterizzano. Sarà apprezzato soprattutto da coloro che amano i libri di Sarah J. Maas per il loro stile divertente e tamarro.

After a second book that I struggled to finish and had left me a little disappointed, “Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows” by Sarah J. Maas is back to being action-packed, delivering a succession of twists and turns.

Bryce, Hunt, Tharion and Ithan have to fight the domination of the Asteris, with all the help they can find, even from other Maasverse sagas, thanks to the introduction of the multiverse.

Even Tharion’s point of view, which was extremely boring in the previous volume, becomes more interesting thanks to the introduction of a new character who brings some life to his chapters.

This third volume of the series has the task of wrapping up many of the previously introduced plots and subplots, and in this sense it might seem a bit rushed. The crossover with the ACOTAR series is present, but in a limited way, and some readers may find the character of Nesta a little out of character. Let’s say the focus is clearly on the characters in this series, as is understandable, so everyone else makes significant but not particularly in-depth cameos.

Bryce’s formative cycle is completed, with her evolution from victim of events to an even political heroine, but many of her plans are confused and at times illogical and their success seems to depend more on plot armour than on her foresight.

But even she seems a capable and reasonable leader compared to Ithan, whose point of view is almost painful to read because of the large number of obviously idiotic choices he makes, and which are somehow rewarded in the end.

Put like that it sounds like a hastily and superficially written book, but in reality all these are but minor flaws to me because “Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows” manages to entertain and engross readers. The book is full of thrilling, gripping moments that capture the attention and keep you glued to the pages. Sarah J. Maas knows how to engage her readers, creating a mix of excitement and action that makes it hard to tear oneself away from the story.

There is no shortage of romantic scenes either, for fans of the genre.

All in all, ‘Crescent City 3: House of Flame and Shadows’ is a book I would recommend to fans of the author. In spite of some questionable narrative choices and a conclusion that seems a bit rushed, the novel manages to entertain thanks to its action, twists and turns and engaging atmosphere. It will be appreciated above all by those who love Sarah J. Maas’s books for their fun style.
