“La casa di Cielo e Aria” è un romanzo urban fantasy ed è il secondo volume della saga di Crescent City di Sarah J. Maas. In Italia è stato pubblicato da Mondadori il 12 Aprile 2022 (io l’ho letto in inglese, perché sono impaziente).

Dopo gli eventi del primo libro, Bryce e Hunt cercano di tornare alla normalità, nonostante il loro nuovo status di celebrità ed eroi cittadini. Tuttavia presto si ritrovano coinvolti nei piani dei ribelli di Ophion, e in men che non si dica i due protagonisti più una serie di personaggi tra cui fratellastro di Bryce, Ruhn, il lupo mannaro Ithan, il mutaforma marino Tharion e il nuovo “fidanzato” di Bryce, Connor, imposto dal crudele Re dell’Autunno si rincorreranno alla ricerca di un ragazzino dai poteri smisurati che potrebbe essere una pedina fondamentale nel rovesciare o conservare il potere costituito. Piano piano, si scoprirà che la posta in gioco è ancora più alta.
I romanzi di Sarah J. Maas sono caratterizzati da alcuni elementi che o si amano o si odiano: i protagonisti esageratamente belli e desiderabili, i maschi semi-umani gelosi e territoriali, la presenza di compagni di vita predestinati, ma anche molta azione, intrighi e colpi di scena.
Io trovo le sue trame sempre avvincenti e molto ben costruite; ammetto che in questo caso secondo me si sente che il libro è un po’ di transizione. L’indagine che vede impegnati i protagonisti per la maggior parte del tempo sembra a tratti pretestuosa (Bryce corre degli enormi rischi per mettere in salvo una persona che non ha mai conosciuto soltanto perché “la sua storia le faceva tenerezza”, il che secondo me è una motivazione un po’ debole); il principale colpo di scena è ancora una volta legato al personaggio di Danika, così come nel volume precedente. Ora che i due protagonisti fanno coppia fissa, inoltre, le scene di passione sono un po’ meno tormentate e si susseguono a cadenza regolare, come se dovessero ogni tanto timbrare il cartellino.
Di fatto il grosso delle novità appaiono nell’ultimo 10% del libro, per terminare con un finale che lascerà il lettore a bocca aperta e che cambia completamente la direzione presa da questa saga.
Da qui potrebbe diventare una serie geniale oppure una tamarrata pazzesca; ma questo potremo saperlo solo con il prossimo libro.

After the events of the first book, Bryce and Hunt try to get back to normal, despite their new status as celebrities and city heroes. However, they soon find themselves caught up in the plans of Ophion’s rebels, and before long the two protagonists plus a number of characters including Bryce’s half-brother Ruhn, the werewolf Ithan, the mer Tharion and Bryce’s new “fiancé” Connor, imposed by the cruel King of Autumn, will be chasing after a young boy with immense powers who could be a key pawn in overthrowing or preserving the established power. Slowly, they will discover that the stakes are even higher.
Sarah J. Maas’ novels are characterised by certain elements that you either love or hate: the exaggeratedly beautiful and desirable protagonists, the jealous and territorial Fae males, the presence of predestined life partners (“mates”, that always sound like Australian dudes to me), but also a lot of action, intrigue and twists.
I always find her plots compelling and very well constructed; I admit that in this case I feel the book is a bit transitional. The investigation in which the protagonists are involved for most of the time seems often specious (Bryce takes huge risks to save someone he has never met just because “his story was endearing”, which I think is a rather weak motivation); the main twist is once again tied to Danika’s character, as in the previous volume. Now that the two protagonists are a steady couple, moreover, the scenes of passion are a little less tormented and follow each other at regular intervals, as if they had to punch the clock every now and then.
In fact, the bulk of the novelties appear in the last 10% of the book, ending with an ending that will leave the reader speechless and completely change the direction taken by this saga.
From here it could become a brilliant series or ridiculous fan-service; but we will only know this with the next book.
