“Blood of the Prophet” è il secondo volume della trilogia fantasy di Kat Ross “Il quarto elemento”, edita dalla Dunwich.

Il libro, uscito a fine 2017, riprende da dove avevamo lasciato i nostri protagonisti alla fine del primo, così riprendiamo una martoriata Nazafareen e Darius, nonché , le loro amiche. Mentre nel precedente volume le azioni avvenivano sempre nel loro regno, con solo il perfido re persiano come autorità, qui vediamo approfonditi molto bene anche gli altri imperi confinanti. Rivediamo dunque Re Alexander della Macedonia, ingenuo e letale conquistatore, ma anche la regina Neblis, creatura oscura che sembra abitare in un mondo fatto di morte e oscurità.
In questo libro, i protagonisti devono cercare di salvare il profeta Zarathustra, imprigionato da centinaia d’anni e, seppur con la mente compromessa, l’unico in grado di dare risposte a come risolvere una volta per tutte le schiavità dei daeva. Nazafareen non è l’unica a cercarlo, però, infatti nuove forze hanno mire su queste conoscenze e complicheranno le cose.
La narrazione si arricchisce di due nuovi punti di vista narranti, cioè Balthazar, il negromante di cui avevamo fatto la conoscenza nel primo libro, e Araxa, uno dei Numeratori più inflessibili e più critici verso i daeva e verso la magia in generale. Credo che questo sia un punto importante del libro, perché entrambi i personaggi, malvagi e a tutti gli effetti antagonisti, non potrebbero essere più diversi tra loro, mostrandoci modi diversi di “essere cattivi”, anche contrapposti. Tutti e due hanno una personalità molto delineata e con cui, nonostante siano piuttosto orribili, è facile anche empatizzare quando non si è impegnati ad odiarli.
Il romanzo sembra diviso in due parti ben distinte: la prima, dove vengono disposti i vari schieramenti come pezzi su una scacchiera, la seconda dove inizia l’azione e vediamo gli scontri tra i vari personaggi. Sebbene la prima parte sia molto importante poiché delinea bene le personalità, le ambizioni e cosa c’è in ballo, l’ho trovata molto lenta e ho fatto fatica ad andare avanti. La seconda, invece, sembra mettere il turbo e si divora in pochissimo tempo, con azione, combattimenti ed emozioni, ritrovando il ritmo del primo. Nonostante la prima parte mi abbia fatto faticare (molto incentrata anche sulla storia d’amore, che a me un po’ annoia), arrivata alla fine ho mantenuto una gran voglia di andare avanti a leggere il terzo.
La storia originale, i personaggi ben delineati e la trama ricca di colpi di scena e di dettagli rendono anche questo libro una perla del fantasy da non perdere.

The book, published in 2016, starts where we left the main characters at the end of the first, so we find a tormented Nazafareen and Darius, as well as Tijah and Myrri, their friends. While in the previous volume the actions always took place in their kingdom, with only the perfidious Persian king as authority, here we see very well deepened also the other neighboring empires. So we see King Alexander of Macedonia, a naive and deadly conqueror, but also Queen Neblis, a dark creature who seems to live in a world of death and darkness.
In this book, the protagonists must try to save Prophet Zarathustra, imprisoned for hundreds of years and, albeit with a compromised mind, the only one able to give answers to how to solve once and for all the slavery of the daeva. Nazafareen is not the only one looking for him, however, in fact, new forces are coming and will complicate things.
The novel is enriched by two new points of view, namely Balthazar, the necromancer we met in the first book, and Araxa, one of the most inflexible and critical Numerators, who hates daevas and magic in general. I think this is an important part of the book, because both characters, evil and indeed villains, could not be more different from each other, showing us different ways of “being bad”, even opposed. Both of them have a very clear personality with which, although they are quite horrible, it’s easy to empathize (when you’re not hating them).
The novel seems to be divided into two distinct parts: the first, where the various formations are arranged as pieces on a board, the second where the action starts and we see the clashes between the various characters. Although the first part is very important because it outlines well the personalities, ambitions and what is at stake, I found it very slow and I struggled to move forward. The second, however, it’s faster with action, fighting and emotions, like “The Midnight Sea”. Although the first part made me work hard (very focused also on the love story, which I always find boring), I arrived at the end with a great desire to go on reading the third.
The original story, the well-defined characters, the plot full of twists and details make this book a pearl of fantasy you cannot miss.
