“The Witcher” è una serie TV prodotta da Netflix e tratta dalla saga di Geralt di Rivia dell’autore polacco Andrzej Sapkowski. I libri erano già stati ispirazione per la celebre serie di videogiochi.
In un universo fantastico abitato da umani, elfi, e altre specie magiche, Geralt di Rivia (Henry Cavill) è un witcher, cioè un umano geneticamente modificato con pericolose pozioni per renderlo più forte e resistente, che si guadagna da vivere uccidendo mostri.
Parallelamente, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) è una ragazza gobba, ripudiata dalla propria famiglia, che viene salvata da una potente maga che vede in lei le capacità per diventare maga a sua volta.
Nel regno di Cintra, intanto, la giovanissima principessa Cirilla (detta Ciri, interpretata da Freya Allan) fugge dall’invasione del suo paese con l’ultima raccomandazione, da parte della nonna, la regina Calanthe, di cercare Geralt di Rivia a tutti i costi; i due infatti sono legati dal destino.
Le vicende dei tre personaggi si intrecciano nel corso della storia.
Una cosa che bisogna assolutamente sapere per capire la vicenda è che, per la maggior parte della serie, si intrecciano tre linee temporali diverse: la prima, in ordine cronologico, è quella di Yennefer, seguita da quella di Geralt, che si svolge per la maggior parte prima della nascita di Ciri, e infine quella di Ciri stessa, che rappresenta il presente.
Una delle pecche della serie è senz’altro il fatto che questa cronologia non è spiegata in alcun modo, neanche con un piccolo titolo tipo “12 anni prima”, e lo spettatore inizia a intuirla soltanto intorno al quarto o quinto episodio, dopo aver visto personaggi morti tornare misteriosamente sulla scena.
La ragione di questa scelta è quella di intrecciare le vicende raccontate nella serie di romanzi che nel prequel composto da un’antologia di racconti. Nonostante questo sia comprensibile e una scelta molto azzeccata per dare ritmo alla serie, senza una spiegazione la visione risulta un po’ confusa per lo spettatore.
Personalmente ho letto la saga di romanzi Sapkowski e, devo ammettere, non l’ho affatto amata, trovandola noiosa, banale e terribilmente sessista.
La serie invece, nel complesso, risulta gradevole e abbastanza avvincente (superati i primi tre lentissimi episodi): molto del merito va agli interpreti, che risultano perfettamente azzeccati per i loro ruoli.
Cavill è un Geralt scontroso e di poche parole, ma la sceneggiatura gli regala una sua ironia e senso dell’umorismo che nei libri faticava ad emergere, mentre Anya Chalotra è una Yennefer ambiziosa e decisa. Una menzione particolare va alla resa del personaggio di Jaskier (Ranuncolo/Dandelion nei libri e videogiochi), che nei romanzi trovavo davvero fastidioso e qui invece è adorabile, e all’affascinante e volitiva regina Calanthe, che ruba la scena a qualsiasi strigo ogni volta che compare sullo schermo.
La serie “The Witcher” è stata presentata al pubblico come “il nuovo Trono di Spade”, ma secondo me il paragone è improprio: non aspettatevi i colpi di scena e gli intrecci politici di Westeros, questa serie è decisamente più tradizionale, con un universo fantasy abbastanza classico e personaggi che fanno esattamente quello che ci aspettiamo.
La sola somiglianza con “Il Trono di Spade”, oltre all’ambientazione fantasy, è l’abbondante presenza di nudo femminile, con una “quota tette” che viene rigorosamente rispettata a intervalli regolari.
Nel complesso, non aspettatevi la serie che vi cambierà la vita, ma la consiglio comunque agli amanti del fantasy, anche perché così capirete tutti i meme e le vignette che stanno girando sul web, che sono anche meglio del materiale di partenza.
Se invece dopo averla vista vi verrà la curiosità di leggere i libri, vi anticipo che per quanto mi riguarda non ne vale la pena.

In a fantasy universe inhabited by humans, elves, and other magical species, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) is a witcher, a human genetically modified with dangerous potions to make him stronger and more resistant, who makes a living killing monsters.
In parallel, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) is a hunchbacked girl, repudiated by her family, who is saved by a powerful sorceress who sees in her the ability to become a sorceress herself.
In the kingdom of Cintra, meanwhile, the very young Princess Cirilla (called Ciri, played by Freya Allan) escapes from the invasion of her country with the last recommendation, by her grandmother, Queen Calanthe, to look for Geralt of Rivia at all costs; the two are in fact bound by fate.
The events of the three protagonists are intertwined in the course of the story.
One thing you absolutely need to know to understand the story is that, for most of the series, three different time lines take place: the first, in chronological order, is that of Yennefer, followed by that of Geralt, which takes place for the most part before the birth of Ciri, and finally that of Ciri herself, which represents the present.
One of the flaws of the series is undoubtedly the fact that this chronology is not explained in any way, not even with a small title like “12 years before”, and the viewer only begins to grasp it around the fourth or fifth episode, after seeing dead characters mysteriously return to the scene.
The reason for this choice is to link the events told in the series of novels with those of the prequel, which consists of an anthology of short stories. Although this is understandable and a very good choice to give rhythm to the series, without an explanation the vision is slightly confusing for the viewer.
Personally I read the saga of novels by Sapkowski and, I must admit, I did not love it at all, finding it boring, banal and terribly sexist.
The series instead, on the whole, is pleasant and quite compelling (after the first three very slow episodes): much of the credit goes to the performers, who are perfectly suited for their roles.
Cavill is a grumpy, silent Geralt, but the screenplay gives him an irony and sense of humour that struggled to emerge in the books, while Anya Chalotra is an ambitious and determined Yennefer. A special mention goes to Jaskier’s character (Dandelion in books and video games), which I found really annoying in the novels while is adorable her, and to the charming, strong-willed Queen Calanthe, who steals the scene from any witcher every time she appears on screen.
The series “The Witcher” was presented to the public as “the new Game of Thrones” but in my opinion the comparison is improper: don’t expect the twists and turns and the political plots of Westeros, this series is definitely more traditional, with a fairly classic fantasy universe and characters that do exactly what we expect.
The only similarity with “Game of Thrones “, in addition to the fantasy setting, is the abundant presence of female nudity, with a “boob quota” that is strictly respected at regular intervals.
All in all, do not expect the series that will change your life, but I recommend it anyway to fantasy lovers, also because then you will understand all the meme and cartoons that are viral on the web, which are even better than the source material.
If, on the other hand, after having seen it, you will be curious to read the books, I anticipate that as far as I am concerned it’s not worth it.
