Perché “Star Trek Voyager” è una serie che ha passato la prova del tempo a pieni voti / Review of “Star Trek Voyager”

“Star Trek Voyager” è una serie tv statunitense andata in onda dal 1995 al 2001, spin off di “Star Trek The Next Generation”, ambientata in quegli anni, e con l’obiettivo di narrare una spedizione spaziale in un quadrante sconosciuto, quello Delta.

Tutte le sette stagioni sono disponibili in Italia su Netflix e, anche se la serie è datata, ve la consiglio assolutamente perché io l’ho trovata meravigliosa e invecchiata benissimo.

La trama racconta le peregrinazioni della nave stellare Voyager, capitanata da Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). La Federazione, infatti, manda la nave nello spazio Cardassiano, dove un gruppo di ribelli, i Maquis, non riconoscendo i trattati di pace, continuano a combattere la loro guerra. Sulla nave del capitano ribelle Chakotay (Robert Beltran), vi è infiltrata una spia amica di Janeway, il vulcaniano Tuvok (Tim Russ), che la capitana è in missione per recuperare e salvare. Tuttavia, durante lo scontro con i Maquis, entrambe le navi vengono catturate da un essere alieno e spedite nel quadrante Delta, a più di 70.000 anni luce dalla Terra. I due equipaggi non hanno altra scelta che unirsi e collaborare per tornare a casa.

L’aspetto interessante della serie è che non sono tutti specialisti provetti, infatti, nella prima battaglia perdono la vita gran parte degli ufficiali e vengono così promossi i guardiamarina alle prime armi, tra cui Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) e Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), quest’ultimo addirittura ex-galeotto. Il capitano Janeway non ha altra scelta che promuovere anche i Maquis, tra cui B’Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), una mezza klingon piuttosto irosa, ma brillante ingegnere. Il personaggio più interessante, tuttavia, è sicuramente l’iconico Dottore (Robert Picardo), cioè il medico olografico di emergenza: quando il medico della nave perde la vita, l’equipaggio attiva un ologramma che dovrebbe svolgere le funzioni di base e assistere il dottore principale, ma questo, rimasto l’unico, diventa sempre più importante. Dapprima scorbutico e scostante, il Dottore diventa un’IA completa, iniziando a imparare, sviluppare empatia e sentimenti, e diventando un personaggio meraviglioso che io ho amato alla follia.

La storia è sostanzialmente basata sul tentativo di tornare a casa, dapprima cercando modi di essere trasportati immediatamente, dopo tentando di accorciare il viaggio. La serie riprende senza dubbio il carattere pionieristico delle prime versioni, e molto è basato sulle relazioni tra i personaggi sulla nave e sui popoli che incontrano; in particolare, nel pilot si uniscono all’equipaggio Neelix (Ethan Phillips), un talassiano simpatico e rumoroso, e Kes (Jennifer Lien), una ocampa che invecchia rapidamente (la sua specie vive meno di dieci anni). Kes, purtroppo, non ha incontrato il favore del pubblico e lascia l’equipaggio nella quarta stagione, sostituita dalla ormai famosissima Sette di Nove (Jeri Ryan), diventata simbolo della serie.

Non so nemmeno da dove cominciare a spiegare perché la serie mi è piaciuta tanto, ma credo che il punto forte siano i personaggi: erano anni che non mi capitava di amare tutti, ma proprio tutti i protagonisti. Ero affezionata a ognuno di loro, lasciarli è stato quasi un trauma dopo sette stagioni che ho divorato episodio dopo episodio. Nessuna sorpresa che il Capitano Janeway sia diventato così iconico nei forum internazionali, l’ho adorata anche io.

Unica pecca, parere personale, è che non si può fare amoreggiare due personaggi per sette stagioni da venticinque episodi circa ciascuna, e poi fare mettere insieme lui con un’altra, per quanto fantastica, nell’ultimissimo episodio. Cioè, non si fa. Ok, che poi hanno scritto un romanzo per metterci una pezza, ma no.

In conclusione, una serie che mi ha emozionata e, penso, mi abbia fatto diventare ufficialmente una trekker. Assolutamente consigliata!

“Star Trek Voyager” is an American TV series aired from 1995 to 2001, a spin-off of “Star Trek The Next Generation”, set in those years, and with the aim of narrating a space expedition in an unknown quadrant, the Delta one.

All seven seasons are available  on Netflix and, even if the series is dated, I absolutely recommend it because I found it wonderful and aged very well.

The plot tells the wanderings of the starship Voyager, captained by Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). The Federation, in fact, sends the ship into Cardassian space, where a group of rebels, the Maquis, not recognizing the peace treaties, continue to fight their war. On the ship of the rebel captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), a spy friend of Janeway’s, the Vulcan Tuvok (Tim Russ), who the captain is on a mission to recover and save. However, during the clash with the Maquis, both ships are captured by an alien being and sent to the Delta Quadrant, more than 70,000 light years from Earth. The two crews have no choice but to unite and work together to return home.

The interesting aspect of the series is that they are not all experienced specialists, in fact, in the first battle most of the officers lose their lives and the novice midshipmen are promoted, including Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), the latter even ex-con. Captain Janeway has no choice but to promote the Maquis as well, including B’Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), a rather irosaic half Klingon, but a brilliant engineer. The most interesting character, however, is certainly the iconic Doctor (Robert Picardo), the emergency medical hologram: when the ship’s doctor loses his life, the crew activates a hologram that should perform basic functions and assist the main doctor, but he, the only one left, becomes more and more important. At first grumpy and disagreeable, the Doctor becomes a complete AI, beginning to learn, develop empathy and feelings, and becoming a wonderful character that I loved madly.

The story is basically based on trying to get home, first looking for ways to be transported immediately, then trying to shorten the journey. The series undoubtedly takes up the pioneering character of the early versions, and much is based on the relationships between the characters on the ship and the peoples they meet; especially in the pilot Neelix (Ethan Phillips), a nice and noisy Thalassian, and Kes (Jennifer Lien), a rapidly aging ocampa (his species lives less than ten years) join the crew. Kes, unfortunately, didn’t meet with the public’s favor and leaves the crew in the fourth season, replaced by the now famous Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), which has become a symbol of the series.

I don’t even know where to begin to explain why I liked the series so much, but I think the strong point is the characters: it’s been years since I’ve loved all the protagonists. I was fond of each of them, leaving them was almost a trauma after seven seasons that I devoured episode after episode. No wonder Captain Janeway became so iconic in international forums, I loved her too.

The only flaw, in my personal opinion, is that you can’t make love to two characters for seven seasons of about twenty-five episodes each, and then have him hooked up with another one, however fantastic, in the very last episode. I mean, you don’t do that. Okay, then they wrote a novel to put a rag on it, but no.

In conclusion, a series that excited me and, I think, officially made me a trekker. Absolutely recommended!
