“Grantchester” è una serie tv poliziesca gialla ambientata in una cittadina britannica negli anni ’50, appunto Grantchester. Trae spunto dal libro Sidney Chambers and The Shadow of Death, scritto da James Runcie.
Il protagonista è la versione figa e “peccatrice” di Don Matteo: Sydney Chambers (James Norton) è un reverendo anglicano, giovane, bello e molto interessato ad alcool e donne, che risolve crimini con il cinico detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green). A differenza di Don Matteo, il protagonista è pieno di insicurezze, dubbi e traumi, non è infallibile e non suscita amore e rispetto incontrastati; con il detective ha un rapporto paritario di stima reciproca e l’amico, spesso, si occupa di riportarlo al suo posto.
Grantchester è un po’ come Gubbio, in effetti; un paesino con poche anime ma tutte molto intenzionate a perpetrare crimini complessi e articolati, piena di personaggi memorabili.
Accanto a Sydney, troviamo la scorbutica ma buona signora Maguire, il giovane e omosessuale viceparroco Leonard (che non solo ha problemi con la chiesa, ma deve anche tenerlo nascosto a tutti perché all’epoca era ancora reato), ma soprattutto Amanda, amica di buona famiglia di cui Sydney è innamorato.
La serie al momento ha 5 stagioni da 6 episodi l’una (più uno speciale natalizio), di cui solo tre disponibili in Italia su Amazon Prime Video; le altre due vedono un nuovo protagonista, Will Davenport, che sostituisce Sydney. Pur non essendo altrettanto un buon personaggio, riesce egregiamente a prendere le redini di una serie avviata. Le restanti stagioni sono andate in onda sul canale gratuito Giallo.
La serie l’ho scoperta assolutamente a caso, il che mi fa sentire doppiamente fortunata ad averla trovata: trovo assurdo di non averne mai sentito parlare, perché è davvero bella, avvincente e con personaggi intensi a cui lo spettatore si affeziona. La lunghezza contenuta delle stagioni, inoltre, si presta facilmente alla maratona televisiva e la si divora in poco, anzi pochissimo, tempo.
L’ambientazione poi è interessante e curata, complice la fotografia tipica delle serie inglesi e di una cura nei dettagli notevole (specie le automobili e i vestiti).
La consiglio caldamente a tutti gli appassionati di gialli, di serie inglesi in costume e a chi ha apprezzato Don Matteo.

The protagonist is Sydney Chambers (James Norton), an Anglican pastor: young, handsome and very interested in alcohol and women, he solves crimes with the help of cynical detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green). The main character is a man full of insecurities, doubts and traumas, who has an equal relationship of mutual esteem with the detective. Grantchester is a small town with few inhabitants who are all memorable characters, very intent on perpetrating complex and articulated crimes.
Next to Sydney, we find the grumpy but good-natured Mrs. Maguire, the young homosexual assistant, pastor Leonard (who not only has problems with the Church, but also has to keep it a secret from everyone because it was still a crime at the time), and notably Amanda, a good family friend with whom Sydney is in love.
The series currently has 5 seasons of 6 episodes each (plus a Christmas special); the fourth and the fifth have a new protagonist, Will Davenport, who replaces Sydney. While not as good a character, he admirably succeeds in taking the reins of a series that has started without him.
I discovered the series absolutely at random, which makes me feel doubly lucky to have found it: I find it absurd to have never heard of it, because it is beautiful, compelling and with intense characters to which the viewer becomes easily attached to. The short length of the seasons, moreover, is perfect for bingewatching and the whole show can be devoured in little, indeed very little, time.
The setting is interesting and very well shown by the typical cinematography of the British series and thanks to a remarkable care for details (especially the cars and the clothes).
I warmly recommend it to all fans of detective stories and British period series.
