“Sangue e Cenere” è il primo volume della saga fantasy/romance “Blood and Ash”, scritta da Jennifer Armentrout e pubblicata in Italia da HarperCollins. In italiano per ora sono disponibili solo i primi due volumi (il secondo, “Un regno di carne e fuoco” è uscito il 6 settembre 2022).
Poppy vive la sua esistenza da reclusa, coperta da un velo ogni volta che esce in pubblico e costantemente sorvegliata da guardie del corpo: infatti, dopo essere sopravvissuta al morso dei Craven, è stata riconosciuta come prescelta degli dèi, e il suo ruolo è quello della Vergine, a cui è legata l’Ascensione di tutta la classe regnante, ovvero un rituale che garantisce loro l’immortalità.
Sotto al velo, tuttavia, si cela una ragazza dall’animo ribelle e desiderosa di vivere appieno la vita.
Ma nel regno ci sono focolai di ribellione che vogliono uccidere Poppy e rovesciare il regno degli Ascesi; in seguito ad un attentato il ruolo di sua guardia del corpo viene ricoperto da Hawke, un soldato giovane e affascinante.
Il legame tra i due si intensifica mentre al di fuori delle mura la situazione si fa sempre più pericolosa.
La saga è narrata in prima persona; l’ambientazione è high fantasy ma il linguaggio usato è piuttosto moderno, soprattutto nei dialoghi.
Ho iniziato il primo volume quando mi sono beccata il Covid e, complice il tempo libero, ho divorato i 4 libri disponibili (in inglese) della saga in meno di una settimana, e avrei anche letto i successivi se l’autrice li avesse già pubblicati! Insomma, ho trovato questa serie davvero avvincente e letteralmente impossibile da mettere giù.
La cosa che più ho apprezzato è che il worldbuilding si svela piano piano, anche con diversi colpi di scena: in effetti, ogni volume termina con qualche rivelazione che sconvolge tutte le idee che il lettore si era fatto durante il resto del romanzo, ma che piano piano mette in ordine tutti gli indizi che erano stati disseminati fino a quel momento.
La componente romance è molto presente, un po’ come accade nei libri di Sarah J Maas (che infatti è citata tra i ringraziamenti), quindi chi ha amato romanzi come la serie di “La corte di rose e spine” sicuramente apprezzerà anche questa saga e la dinamica “enemies to lovers”, così come le eroine che scoprono a poco a poco i loro considerevoli poteri.
Ci sono diverse scene erotiche piuttosto esplicite nel corso della storia, persino un po’ più creative di quanto accada di solito in questi romanzi (specialmente nel quarto volume).
Arrivo un po’ tardi per consigliarvi questa serie come lettura sotto l’ombrellone, ma è sicuramente un’ottima opzione per rendere il rientro dalle vacanze un po’ meno traumatico.
Consigliato a chi ama il fantasy romance, le eroine con molti poteri e i colpi di scena.

Poppy lives her existence as a recluse, covered by a veil every time she goes out in public and constantly guarded by bodyguards: in fact, after surviving the bite of the Craven, she has been recognised as chosen by the gods, and her role is that of the Maiden, to whom the Ascension of the entire ruling class is linked, which is a ritual that guarantees them immortality.
Beneath the veil, however, hides a girl with a rebellious soul and a desire to live life to the fullest.
But in the kingdom there are hotbeds of rebellion that want to kill Poppy and overthrow the kingdom of the Ascended; following an assassination attempt, the role of her bodyguard is filled by Hawke, a young and charming soldier.
The bond between the two intensifies while outside the walls the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.
The saga is narrated in the first person; the setting is high fantasy but the language used is rather modern, especially in the dialogues.
I started the first volume when I got Covid and, thanks to free time, I devoured the four available books of the saga in less than a week, and I would have also read the following ones if the author had already published them! In short, I found this series really gripping and literally impossible to put down.
The thing I appreciated most is that the worldbuilding unravels slowly, even with several twists and turns: in fact, each volume ends with some revelation that overturns all the ideas the reader had had during the rest of the novel, but slowly puts in order all the clues that had been scattered up to that point.
The romance component is very present, a bit like in the books by Sarah J Maas (who is in fact mentioned in the acknowledgments), so those who loved novels like the “A Court of Thorns and Roses ” series and the “enemies to lovers” dynamic, as well as the heroines gradually discovering their considerable powers, will surely appreciate this saga.
There are several rather explicit erotic scenes in the course of the story, even a bit more creative than usually happens in these novels (especially in the fourth volume).
I’m coming a little late to recommend this series as a read under the umbrella, but it’s definitely a good option to make the return from holiday a little less traumatic.
Recommended for those who like fantasy romance, heroines with many powers and lots of twists and turns.
