“I nostri cuori imperfetti” è un romanzo urban fantasy scritto da Melissa Albert e pubblicato in Italia da Rizzoli.
Quando una sera la diciassettenne Ivy sta tornando a casa in macchina con il ragazzo con cui ha appena rotto, improvvisamente vede una ragazza nuda in mezzo alla strada, che sembra essere spuntata dal nulla.
Questo incontro sarà il punto di rottura di un fragile equilibrio in piedi da molti anni tra Ivy stessa, adolescente confusa e distaccata, e la madre Dana, figura misteriosa dalle abilità inquietanti che assomigliano in modo incredibile alla magia vera e propria. Ma questo non è possibile perché Ivy sa benissimo che la magia non esiste… o no?
Tramite il punto di vista alternato di Ivy nel presente e dei ricordi di Dana adolescente, il lettore scopre gli inconfessabili segreti e capacità che si celano nella loro famiglia.
Il rapporto tra madre e figlia, con il suo amore feroce, l’istinto di protezione e allo stesso tempo la volontà di controllo e il risentimento che genera, sono al centro di questo romanzo oscuro quanto avvincente.
I personaggi di Ivy e Dana, insieme ad altre figure che scopriamo nel corso del romanzo, come Marion, Fee e Astrid, sono quelle più appassionanti, mentre la maggior parte dei personaggi maschili rimane decisamente sullo sfondo. Ma del resto è giusto così: questa è una storia di streghe, e sono loro le assolute protagoniste.
Le atmosfere del romanzo ricordano un po’ il film degli anni ’90 “Giovani Streghe” e, sebbene in chiave minore, “Amore e Incantesimi” (per quanto l’amore sia decisamente meno preponderante degli incantesimi).
La magia presente nel romanzo è una forza della natura a cui poche persone (ma più di quante si direbbe) possono attingere, ma questa abilità si porta dietro un prezzo da pagare che rischia di diventare sempre più alto, e che finisce col corrompere chi la vede come uno strumento di potere.
Lo stile della narrazione è incalzante, ma non mancano qua e là delle deliziose descrizioni della magia nascosta nella prosaica quotidianità, che fa capolino tra i bar polverosi di New York, i suoi vicoli scuri e i suoi locali poco raccomandabili; come già in “Oltre il Bosco” e il suo seguito, “Il Paese del Buio”, questa caratteristica dello stile dell’autrice permette alla storia di oscillare tra l’azione degli avvenimenti, e delle descrizioni quasi poetiche che contribuiscono alla creazione di un’atmosfera onirica e realistica al tempo stesso.
Consiglio questo romanzo a tutti gli amanti dell’urban fantasy e delle storie al femminile.

When 17-year-old Ivy is driving home one evening with the boy she just broke up with, she suddenly sees a naked girl in the middle of the road who seems to have come out of nowhere.
This encounter will be the breaking point in a fragile balance that has been standing for many years between Ivy herself, a confused and detached teenager, and her mother Dana, a mysterious figure with uncanny abilities that bear an incredible resemblance to actual magic. But this is not possible because Ivy knows full well that magic does not exist-or does it?
Through the alternating point of view of Ivy in the present and the memories of teenage Dana, the reader discovers the unmentionable secrets and abilities that lurk in their family.
The relationship between mother and daughter, with its fierce love, instinct for protection and at the same time the will to control and the resentment it engenders, are at the heart of this dark yet compelling novel.
The characters of Ivy and Dana, along with other figures we discover in the course of the novel, such as Marion, Fee, and Astrid, are the most exciting, while most of the male characters remain decidedly in the background. But then again, that is only right: this is a story about witches, and they are the absolute protagonists.
The novel’s atmosphere is somewhat reminiscent of the 1990s film “The Craft” and, albeit in a minor key, “Practical Magic” (albeit with much less prominence of the romantic element).
The magic present in the novel is a force of nature that few people (but more than one would say) can tap into, but this ability carries with it a price to pay that is likely to become increasingly high, and that eventually corrupts those who see it as an instrument of power.
The style of the narrative is fast-paced, but there is no shortage here and there of delightful descriptions of the magic hidden in the prosaic everyday, peeping through New York City’s dusty bars, its dark alleys and its sketchy establishments; as already in “The Hazel Wood” and its sequel, “The Night Country,” this feature of the author’s style allows the story to oscillate between the action of events, and almost poetic descriptions that contribute to the creation of an atmosphere that is both dreamlike and realistic.
I recommend this novel to all lovers of urban fantasy and stories centered around women.
