“Hidden Heir” è un romanzo fantasy New Adult (a metà quindi tra Young Adult e un lettore maturo), scritto e prodotto da Rose D. Patruno (Rosanna Patruno); per ora è disponibile solo in inglese.
“Hidden Heir” è ambientato in un mondo in cui gli esseri umani convivono con creature soprannaturali: le persone con poteri magici sono chiamate Podestaria e fanno riferimento al Dipartimento degli Affari Soprannaturali (il DeSNA), così come vampiri e lupi mannari.
Inga è una Podestarius di diciotto anni che studia a Cambridge, anche se sua madre vorrebbe che abbandonasse gli studi per dedicarsi a tempo pieno all’attività di famiglia, e possiede soltanto un potere molto moderato.
Un giorno conosce il misterioso e affascinante Biagio, che le offre il suo aiuto per studiare matematica, ma l’incontro scatena in Inga un processo che la mette in contatto con il suo vero potere.
Mentre intorno a lei ragazze che le somigliano iniziano a scomparire, Inga si trova a scoprire segreti di famiglia che sono stati tenuti nascosti per troppo tempo, e ad entrare nel mondo di Biagio, altrettanto ricco di misteri e pericoli, fino alla scoperta che uno stregone molto potente sta dando la caccia proprio a lei.
Il libro è avvincente e scorrevole, e alterna momenti di azione ad altri, più introspettivi, dedicati all’approfondimento dei personaggi.
Il worldbuilding è molto articolato, e fonde elementi prettamente fantastici come la magia con una loro valutazione in termini scientifici; l’organizzazione del mondo magico, con un dipartimento dedicato e specifiche infrastrutture ospedaliere, mi ha ricordato un po’ Harry Potter.
Nonostante il romanzo sia scritto in inglese, rispetto ad altri libri provenienti dal mercato americano, questo secondo me svela la sua origine italiana nella grande importanza che viene data alla famiglia dei personaggi: sia per Inga che per Biagio, la famiglia è un qualcosa di presente, a tratti opprimente o molto conflittuale, come un mondo all’interno del mondo magico in cui i protagonisti si muovono.
Come genere, secondo me “Hidden Heir” può considerarsi un romanzo di formazione, tuttavia la storyline romantica ha una grande importanza, e la storia di Inga e Biagio ha tutta la magia e l’entusiasmo totalizzante di un primo amore.
Il romanzo è il primo di una serie, quindi non ci resta che aspettare per sapere cosa succederà nei seguiti.
In conclusione, consiglio questo romanzo a chi cerca una lettura avvincente, con molti misteri e una bella spolverata di romance.

“Hidden Heir” is set in a world where humans coexist with supernatural creatures: people with magical powers are called Podestarius and refer to the Department of Supernatural Affairs (the DeSNA), as well as vampires and werewolves.
Inga is an eighteen-year-old Podestarius studying at Cambridge, although her mother would like her to abandon her studies to devote herself full-time to the family business, and she possesses only a very moderate power.
One day she meets the mysterious and charming Biagio, who offers her help to study mathematics, but the encounter triggers a process in Inga that puts her in touch with her true power.
As girls who look like her begin to disappear around her, Inga finds herself uncovering family secrets that have been kept hidden for too long, and entering Biagio’s world, which is equally full of mysteries and dangers, until she discovers that a very powerful sorcerer is hunting her.
The book is gripping and flowing, and alternates moments of action with others, more introspective, dedicated to the deepening of the characters.
The worldbuilding is very articulated, and blends purely fantastic elements such as magic with their evaluation in scientific terms; the organisation of the magical world, with a dedicated department and specific hospital infrastructure, reminded me a little of Harry Potter.
Although the novel is written in English, compared to other books from the American market, this in my opinion reveals its Italian origin in the great importance given to the family of the characters: for both Inga and Biagio, the family is something present, at times oppressive or very conflicting, like a world within the magical world in which the protagonists move.
As a genre, in my opinion ‘Hidden Heir’ can be considered a coming-of-age novel, however the romantic storyline is of great importance, and the story of Inga and Biagio has all the magic and all-consuming excitement of a first love.
The novel is the first in a series, so we just have to wait and see what will happen in the sequels.
In conclusion, I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a gripping read, with lots of mysteries and a nice sprinkling of romance.
