Recensione del film “Fast Color” / Review of “Fast Color” (movie)

“Fast Color” è un film di fantascienza/distopico di Julia Hart del 2018.

In un prossimo futuro devastato da una terribile siccità globale, Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) è una donna costantemente in fuga per via delle sue eccezionali capacità: di notte deve legarsi al letto perché le sue “crisi” scatenano terremoti e altri fenomeni atmosferici incontrollabili. Per questo motivo alcuni scienziati e altre forze speciali governative le danno la caccia con lo scopo di sottoporla a esperimenti.

Dopo diversi anni torna dalla madre Bo (Lorraine Toussaint) e dalla figlia Lyla (Saniyya Sidney), che vivono isolate nel deserto americano: anche loro hanno particolari poteri che consentono loro di polverizzare e ricostruire gli oggetti a loro piacimento.

Ruth cercherà con il loro aiuto di imparare a controllare i propri poteri e a recuperare il rapporto con la figlia, da cui si era allontanata molti anni prima.

Il film si inserisce a pieno diritto nel filone dei supereroi e lo fa in modo del tutto originale e inaspettato: l’elemento che più mi ha colpito infatti è che, nonostante ci siano inseguimenti, azione e anche una scoperta che potrebbe portare alla salvezza del pianeta, il fulcro della narrazione fosse il rapporto tra tre generazioni di donne molto diverse tra loro ma tutte in grado, a modo loro, di cambiare le sorti del mondo. Se la piccola Lyla è entusiasta delle sue capacità, Ruth è tormentata e Bo costantemente preoccupata dal mettere in pericolo la nipote. Il senso di responsabilità che da Spiderman in poi ha determinato le motivazioni dei supereroi, qui assume una sfumatura molto più intima e realistica.
L’interpretazione di Lorraine Toussaint, nel ruolo della matriarca Bo, è particolarmente intensa e memorabile.

Le ambientazioni del deserto americano sono molto suggestive; un’altra caratteristica particolare è che, sebbene il mondo in cui si muovono i personaggi sia effettivamente sull’orlo del collasso, la loro vita va avanti adattandosi alle circostanze. Il senso di catastrofe imminente è dato da particolari sullo sfondo, come il prezzo altissimo dell’acqua, trasportata in contenitori di recupero chiusi alla bell’e meglio.

Gli effetti speciali sono limitati, dato il budget medio/basso del film, ma quando vengono usati questo avviene con grande eleganza e con soluzioni visive assolutamente spettacolari.

Il film parla del rapporto profondo tra la capacità di portare grandi cambiamenti e la paura che accompagna questo grande potere, e lo fa utilizzando il linguaggio della maternità e della responsabilità di una nuova vita.

Per la sua originalità e magistrale esecuzione ha ottenuto diversi riconoscimenti e pare che Amazon Prime produrrà una serie TV ispirata alla pellicola, creata dalla stessa regista e sceneggiatrice del film.

Lo consiglio assolutamente a tutti gli appassionati di genere distopico e chi cerca un film di supereroi intimo e inaspettato.

“Fast Color” is a 2018 science fiction/dystopian film by Julia Hart.

In the near future devastated by a terrible global drought, Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is a woman constantly on the run because of her exceptional abilities: at night she has to tie herself to her bed because her “episodes” trigger earthquakes and other uncontrollable weather phenomena. For this reason, scientists and other special government forces hunt her down with the aim of experimenting on her.

After several years, she returns to her mother Bo (Lorraine Toussaint) and her daughter Lyla (Saniyya Sidney), who live isolated in the American desert: they too have special powers that allow them to pulverize and reconstruct objects as they please.

With their help, Ruth will try to learn how to control her powers and recover her relationship with her daughter, whom she had left years earlier.

The film fits right in the superheroes genre and does so in a completely original, unexpected way: the element that struck me the most is that, although there are chases, action and even a discovery that could lead to the salvation of the planet, the focus of the narrative was the relationship between three generations of women very different from each other but all able, in their own way, to change the fate of the world. If little Lyla is enthusiastic about her abilities, Ruth is tormented and Bo constantly worried about putting her granddaughter in danger. The sense of responsibility that has determined the motivations of superheroes since Spiderman, here takes a much more intimate and realistic nuance.

Lorraine Toussaint’s interpretation of the role of the matriarch Bo is particularly intense and memorable.

The settings of the American desert are very evocative; another characteristic of the movie is that, although the world in which the characters move is actually on the verge of collapse, their lives go on adapting to the circumstances. The sense of imminent catastrophe is given by details in the background, such as the very high price of water, transported in recovery containers closed at best.

The special effects are limited, given the medium/low budget of the film, but when used this is done with great elegance and with absolutely spectacular visual solutions.

The film talks about the deep relationship between the ability to bring great changes and the fear that accompanies this great power, and it does so using the language of motherhood and the responsibility of a new life.

For its originality and masterful execution it has obtained great praise and it seems that Amazon Prime will produce a TV series inspired by the film, created by the director and screenwriter of the movie.

I absolutely recommend it to all fans of dystopian genre and those looking for an intimate and unexpected superhero film.
