“Rule of Wolves” è il secondo romanzo della dilogia di “King of Scars”, che fa seguito alla trilogia del Grishaverse, con protagonista Alina Starkov, e alla dilogia di “Sei di Corvi”, recentemente adattati da Netflix nella serie tv “Tenebre e Ossa”.
Per ora questa dilogia è uscita soltanto in inglese ma confido che la Mondadori la pubblicherà come il resto della serie.
Il romanzo inizia dove avevamo lasciato il finale di “King of Scars” (qui la nostra recensione: https://themantovanis.blog/2020/04/22/recensione-di-king-of-scars-di-leigh-bardugo-review-of-king-of-scars-by-leigh-bardugo/).
Nikolai deve affrontare, oltre al suo demone personale, anche la guerra che minaccia Ravka su più fronti, mentre gli attacchi alla legittimità del suo trono si fanno sempre più insistenti; Zoya impara a conoscere il suo nuovo potere, mentre Nina e Hanne esplorano le insidie del palazzo reale di Fjerda, e il misterioso principe Rasmus, che potrebbe o meno rivelarsi un interlocutore decisivo per la pace tra Ravka e Fjerda.
Se il primo romanzo della dilogia introduceva molti nuovi personaggi e aveva una storia più improntata all’avventura e all’esplorazione di nuovi orizzonti, questo è il capitolo della saga che tira le fila della trama, mettendo insieme tutti gli elementi introdotti finora e regalando dei grandi ritorni che faranno felici tutti i fan della saga.
La trama è incentrata soprattutto sulla guerra imminente e sulle sottotrame politiche, con battaglie epiche e intrighi altrettanto spettacolari.
L’ambientazione è ancora più variegata, estendendosi dallo Shu Han a Fjerda e passando ovviamente per Ravka e Ketterdam.
Insomma, un autentico regalo per gli appassionati del Grishaverse in tutte le sue sfumature, che qui ritrovano i luoghi amati e, oltre ai protagonisti, i personaggi che hanno segnato gli altri libri della saga.
Anche le storie d’amore, per quanto spesso soltanto introdotte quel tanto che basta per completare i personaggi e rendere le loro storie ancora più avvincenti, regalano delle sorprese.
Viene introdotto il tema dell’identità di genere e un personaggio in particolare troverà il proprio posto nel mondo con uno stratagemma inaspettato.
Se proprio dovessi fargli una critica, ho trovato che uno dei personaggi, molto importante nella storia al punto da avere il proprio punto di vista narrante in diversi capitoli, avrebbe potuto essere sfruttato in modo più incisivo, invece di rimanere sempre ai margini dell’azione.
È uno di quei casi in cui l’aspettativa è altissima e la risoluzione del conflitto appare un po’ troppo comoda.
Tuttavia questa scelta va indubbiamente a privilegiare il ritmo della storia, sempre altissimo grazie anche al fatto che il lettore sa sempre qualcosa in meno rispetto al personaggio narrante e che quindi rimane sorpreso quando il suo piano viene svelato.
Il finale, poi, è tutto ciò che un appassionato di fantasy può chiedere.
La Bardugo si conferma ancora una volta una delle voci più caratteristiche del panorama fantasy moderno.

Nikolai has to face not only his personal demon, but also the war that threatens Ravka on several fronts, while the attacks on the legitimacy of his throne become more and more insistent; Zoya learns about her new power, while Nina and Hanne explore the pitfalls of Fjerda’s royal palace, and the mysterious Prince Rasmus, who may or may not prove to be a decisive interlocutor for peace between Ravka and Fjerda.
If the first novel of the duology introduced many new characters and had a story more focused on adventure and exploration of new horizons, this is the chapter of the saga that pulls the strings of the plot, bringing together all the elements introduced so far and offering great returns that will bring joy to all fans of the saga.
The plot is mainly focused on the upcoming war and political subplots, with epic battles and equally spectacular intrigues.
The setting is even more varied, stretching from Shu Han to Fjerda and, of course, Ravka and Ketterdam.
In short, an authentic gift for fans of the Grishaverse in all its nuances, who will find here their beloved locations and, in addition to the protagonists, the characters that have marked the other books of the saga.
Also the love stories, although often only introduced just enough to complete the characters and make their stories even more compelling, offer some surprises.
The theme of gender identity is introduced and one character in particular will find his place in the world with an unexpected ruse.
If I had to give it a criticism, I found that one of the characters, who is so important in the story that he has his own narrating point of view in several chapters, could have been used in a more incisive way, instead of always remaining on the fringes of the action.
It is one of those cases in which the expectation is very high and the resolution of the conflict seems a little too convenient.
However, this choice undoubtedly favours the pace of the story, which is always very high thanks also to the fact that the reader always knows something less than the narrator character and is therefore surprised when his plan is revealed.
The ending, then, is everything a fantasy fan could ask for.
Bardugo once again confirms herself as one of the most distinctive voices on the modern fantasy scene.
