Ann è una studentessa di arte rinascimentale proveniente dalla piccola città rurale di Walla Walla che ha da poco perso il padre, un linguista amatoriale.

Per tutta la sua vita ha desiderato di uscire finalmente dalla sua cittadina, ma, al suo arrivo al MET di New York, presso cui aveva ottenuto uno stage, scopre che a causa di un qui pro quo con un insegnante la sua presenza lì non è più desiderata. L’arrivo provvidenziale del professor Patrick Roland, curatore del museo The Cloisters (“i chiostri”), la divisione del MET dedicata all’arte medievale, che ha bisogno di un’assistente alla ricerca con urgenza, la salva dal tornare a casa sconfitta.

Qui Ann inizia a lavorare con Rachel, una ricca e ambiziosa studentessa di Yale, con cui immediatamente stringe una forte amicizia, e conosce Leo, il giardiniere dai molti segreti.

Presto Ann scopre che Patrick sta studiando la pratica rinascimentale della divinazione tramite i tarocchi, ed è vicino a fare una scoperta storica importante, e si trova al centro di un complicato gioco di relazioni e potere.

“The Cloisters” è un romanzo molto avvincente che piacerà sia agli amanti dei gialli che delle atmosfere “dark academia”.

L’ambientazione, ho scoperto, è un reale museo che si trova vicino a New York, costruito a inizio ‘900 come un convento medievale, per ospitare la collezione Rockfeller.

Il contrasto tra le ambientazioni, tra la sonnolenta Walla Walla e una New York affascinante e brulicante di vita prima, e poi tra New York stessa e l’atmosfera gotica di The Cloisters, è secondo me uno dei punti di forza del libro. In poche pagine vi troverete a passare da una cattedrale gotica a un antiquario pieno di oggetti antichi e misteriosi a un concerto punk nel Bronx.

L’altro punto di forza sono senz’altro i personaggi, affascinanti, misteriosi e ognuno di loro ricco di segreti: persino la protagonista stessa, che conosciamo dalla prima pagina, rivela alla fine un dettaglio della sua storia che non avevo assolutamente intuito.

Il ritmo della vicenda, pur non essendo adrenalinico, è comunque incalzante e riesce a costruire una tensione che si sviluppa piano piano per esplodere nei capitoli finali.

Ho anche apprezzato che la storia non fosse incentrata sui buoni sentimenti quanto su una sorta di cinica giustizia.

Consigliato a chi cerca un romanzo sottilmente inquietante e ricco di atmosfere sinistre.

Ann is a Renaissance art student from the small rural town of Walla Walla who has recently lost her father, an amateur linguist.

All her life she has longed to finally get out of her small town, but upon her arrival at the MET in New York, where she had obtained an internship, she discovers that due to a qui pro quo with a teacher her presence there is no longer needed. The providential arrival of Professor Patrick Roland, curator of The Cloisters museum, the MET’s medieval art division, who urgently needs a research assistant, saves her from returning home defeated.

Here Ann starts working with Rachel, a rich and ambitious Yale student, with whom she immediately strikes up a strong friendship, and meets Leo, the gardener with many secrets.

Soon Ann discovers that Patrick is studying the Renaissance practice of divination through tarot cards, and is close to making an important historical discovery, and finds herself at the centre of a complicated game of relationships and power.

‘The Cloisters’ is a very gripping novel that will appeal to both lovers of thriller stories and dark academia atmospheres.

The setting, I discovered, is a real museum located near New York, built in the early 1900s as a medieval convent to house the Rockefeller collection.

The contrast between the settings, first between sleepy Walla Walla and a fascinating New York teeming with life, and then between New York itself and the gothic atmosphere of The Cloisters, is in my opinion one of the book’s strengths. In just a few pages you will find yourself going from a gothic cathedral to an antique shop full of mysterious objects to a punk concert in the Bronx.

The other strong point are undoubtedly the characters, fascinating, mysterious and each of them full of secrets: even the protagonist herself, whom we know from the first page, reveals at the end a detail of her story that I had not guessed at all.

The pace of the story, while not adrenaline-fuelled, is nonetheless fast-paced and manages to build a tension that slowly builds to explode in the final chapters.

I also appreciated that the story was not about good feelings as much as it was about a kind of cynical justice.

Recommended for those looking for a subtly disturbing novel full of sinister atmospheres.
