Recensione di “Travelers” (Netflix) / Review of “Travelers” (tv series)

“Travelers” è una serie tv di fantascienza prodotta da Netflix e Showcase nel 2016. Composta da 4 stagioni, è interamente disponibile su Netflix.

In un futuro distopico in cui tutto quello che poteva andare male per l’umanità è accaduto, i pochi sopravvissuti hanno creato un sistema di viaggiatori (da cui il titolo Travelers) che tornano indietro nel tempo per cambiare la storia e dare all’umanità un futuro migliore. I viaggiatori prendono possesso di un corpo che, in base ai dati storici, sta per morire e cercano di organizzarsi nel XXI secolo per cambiare le cose, visto che tale secolo sembra essere quello della svolta negativa.

I viaggiatori devono seguire poche semplici regole, chiamate “Protocolli”

Protocollo 1: La missione viene prima di tutto.

Protocollo 2: Mai compromettere la copertura. Lascia il futuro nel passato.

Protocollo 3: Non prendere una vita, non salvare una vita (se non per gli ordini)

Protocollo 4: Non riprodurti.

Protocollo 5 – In mancanza di diversa indicazione, continua la vita del tuo ospite.

Protocollo 6 – Nessuna interazione tra le diverse squadre, se non in casi di emergenza

La trama segue la storia del viaggiatore 3461 (Eric McCormack, famoso per avere interpretato Will di “Will e Grace”) e della sua squadra, impegnati inizialmente nel fermare un asteroide diretto contro la Terra. 3461 prende il corpo dell’agente speciale Grant MacLaren, ma la sua squadra si ritrova in corpi meno convenzionali: Carly, l’agente tattica, occupa il posto di una madre disoccupata che avrebbe dovuto morire per i maltrattamenti del suo compagno; Marcy, il medico, finisce nel corpo di una donna con un forte ritardo mentale; Philip, lo storico del gruppo, vede la sua mente compromessa dal corpo ospite di un eroinomane, mentre il più anziano del gruppo, l’ingegnere, si ritrova nel corpo di un ragazzino che deve sempre andare a scuola nei momenti più delicati.

La squadra di MacLaren cercherà di cambiare la storia e vivere contemporaneamente la vita degli ospiti, innamorandosi e trovandosi di fronte a scelte difficili.

Nonostante si tratti di una serie distopica ricca di azione, mi ha colpito molto l’approfondimento dei personaggi, resi a tutto tondo e in maniera molto empatica: non esistono super buoni o super cattivi, tutti i personaggi sono molto reali e cercano attivamente di fare del bene, anche sbagliando. Si tratta di agenti addestrati e pronti a rinunciare a tutto per il bene comune, e, sebbene il futuro così tragico sia solo appena accennato, gli attori sono riusciti a fare emergere personaggi molto realistici e convincenti. Non manca qualche momento che strappa una risata, ma anche un paio che mi hanno commossa.

Purtroppo la serie è uscita, secondo me, troppo presto, a cavallo tra il successo delle serie tv tutte su Netflix e quelle ancora in broadcast. Sfortunatamente la serie si conclude dopo solo quattro stagioni e non è stata rinnovata: pur avendo un suo finale, sono rimasta molto dispiaciuta, perché penso che fosse avvenieristica e che avrebbe meritato di più.

Come è stata consigliata caldamente a me, io rinnovo il mio consiglio a tutti gli amanti della fantascienza e del genere adrenalinico.

In a dystopian future where everything that could go wrong for humanity has happened, the few survivors have created a system of travelers who go back in time to change history and give humanity a better future. The travelers take over a body that, according to historical records, is about to die and try to organize in the 21st century to change things, as this century seems to be the negative turning point.

Travelers must follow a few simple rules, called “Protocols”:

1. The mission comes first.
2. Leave the future in the past.
3. Don’t take a life; don’t save a life, unless otherwise directed.
4. Do not reproduce.
5. In the absence of direction, maintain your host’s life.
6. Do not communicate with other known travelers outside of your team unless sanctioned..

The plot follows the story of traveler 3461 (Eric McCormack, famous for playing Will in “Will and Grace”) and his team, who are initially engaged in stopping an asteroid headed for Earth. 3461 takes the body of Special Agent Grant MacLaren, but his team finds themselves in less conventional bodies: Carly, the tactical agent, occupies the place of an unemployed mother who should have died from her partner’s abuse; Marcy, the doctor, ends up in the body of a severely mentally ill woman; Philip, the group’s historian, sees his mind compromised by the host body of a heroin addict, while the oldest of the group, the engineer, finds himself in the body of a teenager who always has to go to school at the most delicate times.

MacLaren’s team will try to change history and live the lives of guests at the same time, falling in love and facing difficult choices.

Although this is an action-packed dystopian series, I was very impressed with the depth of the characters, who are treated in a well-rounded, empathetic way: there are no super good guys or super bad guys, all the characters are very real and actively try to do good, even if they make mistakes. These are agents trained and ready to give up everything for the common good, and although the future so tragic is only barely hinted at, the actors have managed to bring out very realistic and convincing characters. There’s no shortage of laugh-out-loud moments, but also some scenes that made me emotional.

Unfortunately the series came out, in my opinion, too early, in between the success of the TV series entirely available on Netflix and those still on broadcast. Unfortunately the series ended after only four seasons and was not renewed: although it had its own ending, I was very disappointed, because I think it was futuristic and would have deserved more.

As it was highly recommended to me, I renew my recommendation to all lovers of science fiction and action genre.
